 8. Debut for flying Flying Spur

01/11/2002

You couldn't have a more impressive barrier trial winner than Gai Waterhouse's two year-old IMPERIALISM.

The gelding by Flying Spur from Lady Kariba, by Zabaleta, will run in Race 1 over 1100m.
In the trial he was ridden by Glen Boss, but tomorrow Len Beasley will be aboard.
Imperialism won his trial by seven lengths in a time of 55.6 for the 900m. Behind him in second spot on the day was Bit Of Knowledge with Eastern Lodge third.

The only possible mark against him, is barrier 3. While that's normally a good posse for a horse, when most of the starters are new ones, those in the inside gates can be at a disadvantage if one in an outside gate decides to play up and leave the inner runners standing flat footed.
Still, he does appear a very smart horse and if all goes well at the start, he could be well in at the finish along with the John Hawkes trained Subjugate (Brendan Fenech), who has been working well over the last fortnight and has the experience of one race under his belt.
Subjugate who ran fourth on debut, will wear blinkers for the first time.
