FORM FACTS
The Internationals dominate pre-post betting for the 2002 Cup, 26 European-based raiders having contested the big race since Vintage Crop won for Dermot Weld in 1993. Vintage Crop carried 59kg to 3rd place in 1995 while Persian Punch was 3rd in both 1998 & 2001. The only other placings since 1993 have come from the Godolphin stable – Central Park (1999) & Give The Slip (2001), both running 2nd. Dermot Weld returns with Vinnie Roe, the 5yo to carry
the same weight (59kg) as Vintage Crop did in 1995, and should he salute, it will be the highest winning weight since Rain Lover (60.5kg) took his 2nd Cup in 1969. 23 horses have carried 57kg or above in the last decade – just 6 have filled a place. Godolphin’s Pugin has a generous weight swing (5.5kg) from the Irish St Leger, his lesser performed stablemate Beekeeper a creditable 6th in the Caulfield Cup. Distinctly Secret signalled he was spot on target for the Melbourne Cup with his 4th in that race, the 4yo taking a similar route to previous Cup winners (in the last 10 years) Subzero, Jezabeel & Ethereal.
