While Nureyev’s son Theatrical was basking in the glory of his son Media Puzzle running away with the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, another son of Nureyev recorded a personal milestone in his stud career.

Coolmore Stud’s Peintre Celebre, unquestionably one of the finest racehorses ever brought to stand at stud in Australia, sired his first Australian winner when the Tony McEvoy-trained Manchega scored an impressive 3 ¼-lengths win at Morphetville on debut. The three-year old filly is one of nine test-bred yearlings conceived in Ireland to southern hemisphere time.

Racing in the famous Robert Sangster colours, Manchega was purchased by the British Bloodstock Agency’s Adrian Nicoll at the 2001 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $500,000.

Manchega is the first foal of the Last Tycoon mare Mattiocco a winner over 8 ½ furlongs in Ireland. Out of the stakes winning Purchasepaperchase (Young Generation), Mattiocco is a half sister to Matiya (Alzao) winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas (G1), second in the English 1000 Guineas (G1) and third in the French Oaks (G1). Another half sister Carambola (Danehill) won the Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial (LR) and was runner-up in the Group 3 Matron Stakes.
