 13. Desert King Registers First Group 1 Winner

01/11/2002

Leading French jockey Dominique Boeuf took the English raider Mr Dinos straight to the front in the Prix Royal-Oak (French St. Leger) (G1) at Longchamp on Sunday and was never headed in recording a 2 1/2-lengths victory. A first crop son Desert King, Mr Dinos credited his Irish Derby (G1) winning sire with his first Group 1 winner.

DESERT KING
A 10 ½-lengths winner of the Prix Berteux - Etalon Marchand de Sable in July, Mr Dinos was coming off a disappointing fifth to Bollin Eric (Shaamit) in the St. Leger (G1) at Doncaster on September 14. Second at Ascot at his only appearance as a two-year old Mr Dinos has won four of his eight starts this season including victories at Newmarket and York, with two seconds (Queen’s Vase (G3) at Royal Ascot and the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle) and one third.

Mr Dinos is the eleventh foal of the 20yo Gay Fandango mare Spear Dance. The Forli stallion Gay Fandango was a pioneering shuttle stallion however his lone season at stud in Australia in 1976 left just 3 live foals.
Mr.Dinos is a three-quarter brother to Derrinstown Derby Trial (G3) winner Risk Material and a half brother to the imported Tate Gallery galloper Bahi winner of the Murray Bridge Cup and third in the Labor Day Cup, Werribee Cup and Eagle Blue Stakes.

Trainer Paul Cole told the Racing Post "Mr Dinos is a jolly nice horse and I've got quite a few decent stayers in my stable. Cut in the ground is definitely an advantage for today's winner.
"The colt went too fast in the St Leger. He's now finished for the season and next year Mr Dinos will be aimed at Cup races."

Desert King is beginning to justify Coolmore’s faith that the son of Danehill will be a classic and cups sire. After a relatively slow beginning in Australia Desert King has a number of highly promising, lightly raced three-year olds including Storm Prince and Mardi Gras that look sure to make the grade. During the week Desert Traveller indicated she might be a classic contender with a close second in the Listed Oaks Trial at Geelong.
