Graduates continued their outstanding run of success this spring with some super
performances at Moonee Valley, highlighted by stakes wins for HELENUS (2001
Easter $80,000), BEFORE TOO LONG (2001 Premier $40,000), GENTLE GENIUS (1999
Easter $250,000) and PINCHBECK (2002 Premier $90,000).
SPINNING HILL - will have a half brother by Peintre Celebre selling at the
Easter Yearling sale
Now for the Derby and Oaks
Inglis Graduates supplied the trifecta in the MVRC A.A.M.I Vase Gr 2, led by
star colt HELENUS (2001 Easter $80,000) from leading filly MACEDON LADY (2001
Classic $22,000) and improving type WILD HEART (2000 Select Weanling $50,000).
The first two cleared out from their rivals at the top of the straight, racing
away from the pack by some six lengths in a dominant display that has stamped
them with favouritism for the Derby and Oaks respectively.
The Leon Corstens trained Helenus again showed a few quirks of personality, with
some petulant head tossing mid race as he sought to remind jockey Steven King
just who was in charge. As has been the case in the past, the horse knows what
he's about and when asked to produce at the business end is more than ready to
oblige and meet the challenge.
Macedon Lady fought the brave fight for her trainer John Symons, chasing gamely
as she always does, but the outcome proved the old scenario "a good colt
will always beat a good filly".
Premier Two Year Olds Pack Some Punch
Vinery Australia's Gilded Time (USA) landed the first blow in the battle for
Australian based first season sire honours, when his son PINCHBECK (2002 Premier
$90,000) showed the benefit of previous race experience to hold out a blazing
finish from RA SUN (2002 Premier $135,000) in the MVRC Express Post Platinum
Stakes L.
Pinchbeck was bred and offered for sale by Tremon Thoroughbreds and is from the
former stakes-winning juvenile Brass, a daughter of renowned Victorian racemare
and producer Golden Fantasy, who's other daughters have already thrown the likes
of Tickle My, Pearl Prince and Mighty Way.
Most punters would agree that highly rated first starter Ra Sun, from the Robbie
Griffiths stable, was a tragedy beaten, after being slow out and finding himself
trapped on the rails. Some fancy footwork finally got him into the clear, and a
dazzling turn of foot very nearly saved the day. But the victory wasn't to be
and he will have to wait until Flemington to show us what he can really do.
Like the winner Pinchbeck, Ra Sun was also purchased at the 2002 Premier
Yearling Sale, where he was knocked down to the Chefs on the Run Syndicate for
$135,000, the highest price paid for a yearling by General Nediym this year. Ra
Sun is the very image of his sire and generated much interest at the sale where
he was one of the most admired colts on the grounds.
The Chefs on the Run Syndicate didn’t have long to wait for a consolation
prize, their two year old filly ARENA STAR (2002 Premier $40,000), also prepared
by Robbie Griffiths, bolted in at Bendigo yesterday. The daughter of Spartacus
led all the way to win with her ears pricked and looks set to handle smarter
company.
Win Comes Before Too Long
Talented filly BEFORE TOO LONG put it all together for a brilliant record
breaking win in the MVRC Champagne Stakes Gr 2 last Thursday night. The Gary
Portelli trained miss has competed against the best sprinters of her age group
this spring, chasing home the likes of Bel Esprit, Yell and arch rival
Innovation Girl, over whom she finally gained the ultimate revenge.
Coming off a month long freshen up and boasting a new "sans blinkers"
look, the Sydney filly skipped clear on the turn, before powering away from
Innovation Girl to record the easiest of wins.
Like Helenus, she too is a product of Widden Stud, being by the powerhouse
Danzig stallion Belong to Me (USA) from handy producer Asian Reef (GB), the dam
of four named foals, all winners including stakes-winning mare Okanui, also
trained by Portelli.
Before Too Long was purchased at the 2001 Premier Yearling Sale in Victoria
where she fetched $40,000, a lucrative pick up indeed, given her winnings to
date of nearly $230,000. Her escalating broodmare appeal is also hard to ignore,
being a promising Group Two winner from an international family bristling with
Group One winners from America, Italy and Ireland.
First Stakes Win for Gentle Genius
Superbly bred Danehill (USA) mare GENTLE GENIUS is no longer a bridesmaid after
a stylish and well deserved win in the MVRC Tesio Stakes Gr 3. Prepared
throughout her career by Tony Wildman, the five year old has run some terrific
races highlighted by a memorable second to Sunline in the STC Coolmore Classic
Gr 1, but amazingly this is her first Black Type success.
Purchased for $250,000 at the 1999 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, she's by
Danehill (USA) from prolific producer Darazina (FR), the dam of four
international stakes-winners in addition to Gentle Genius.
Spinning Hill….Half for Easter
She's the sprinter of the moment and undefeated this spring, following another
super impressive win in the MVRC Schweppes Stakes Gr 2 lifting her career
earnings to a whopping $1.6 million.
Fans of Spinning Hill will be pleased to note that Coolmore Australia as agent
have entered a half-brother to Spinning Hill by Peintre Celebre (USA) for the
2003 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
