 1. US Shuttle Sires Statistics

01/11/2002

The number of active stallions at stud in North America has declined by almost three percent.

The Jockey Club’s annual “Reports of Mares Bred” for the 2002 breeding season lists 3364 stallions covered 59,090 mares in the US this year.

The active stallion numbers have dropped by 2.7 percent since last year, but the number of mares bred to those stallions rose by 1.3 percent.

Significantly, the number of stallions bred to 100 or more mares rode from 77 to 93.

Coolmore’s US arm Ashford Stud, stood 12 of the top 15 stallions covering the biggest books including the first eight.

The aptly-named Grand Slam topped the list, covering a massive book of 215 mares.

He was followed by Giant's Causeway (213 mares); High Yield (184); Louis Quatorze (178); Tale of the Cat (172); Fusaichi Pegasus (169); Black Minnaloushe (161); Stravinsky (158); Mr. Greeley (149); Hennessy (146); Thunder Gulch (145); Honour And Glory (144); More Than Ready (142); Mutakddim (142) and Royal Academy (138).

Australasian breeders will note the size of the books covered by many shuttle sires in the above list.
