 60. Distinctly North Dies

15/05/2002

Distinctly North, sire of last Sunday’s Group 2 Grand Prix Stakes winner Distinctly Secret has died of a suspected heart attack at Allevamento di Besnate in Italy. Distinctly Secret comes from the second Australian bred crop by Distinctly North, who shuttled to Glenlogan Park between 1996-2000, and is his first stakes winner in this country.

Distinctly North
Winner of the Flying Childers Stakes (G2) at Doncaster, Distinctly North was runner-up in the Phoenix Stakes (G1), Middle Park Stakes (G1) and Richmond Stakes. He had two unplaced starts in North America at three before retiring to stud in Ireland. Distinctly North became leading European first-crop sire in 1995 due, in the main, to his son Kahir Almahdan winning the Mill Reef Stakes (G2), Rippon Champion Trophy (LR) and placing in the Middle Park Stakes (G1) and Richmond Stakes (G2).
Another stakes winner for Distinctly North is the 4yo filly Innit who has the distinction of winning stakes in France, Italy and the U.S., including the 2001 Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup Invitational Handicap (G2) at Hollywood Park.

Other stakes winners by Distinctly North include Gulerceler’s Star, champion two-year-old filly in Turkey in 2000; Polar Prince, winner of the ’98 Premio Presidente della Republica (G1); Strikers, Distinctly Dancer, Skip, Nappe Di Cardinale, Disallowed, and Air of Distinction.

Distinctly North is by Northern Dancer stallion Minshaanshu Amad who failed to win a race in 22 starts and ended his stud career in Saudi Arabia. Minshaanshu Amad’s dam Tappahannock (Chieftain) is a sister to champion racemare Cascapedia.
