Few stallions standing at stud anywhere in the world could match Darley Stud’s champion racehorse Singspiel for toughness and class, backed by an internationally renowned pedigree.
Here was a horse that took on and beat the best racehorses of his generation on their home turf. Singspiel’s victories are a roll call of some the world’s most prestigious races including the Japan Cup (G1), Dubai World Cup (G1), Canadian International Stakes (G1), Juddmonte International (G1) and the Coronation Cup (G1). Additionally he ran second to Pilsudski in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). If ever a horse could lay claim to the title of “world champion” then Singspiel is it.
SINGSPIEL
After a pleasing enough start with his two-year olds in Europe last year, Singspiel looks to be on the verge of an outstanding stud career if the performance of his newly turned three-year olds is any guide.
Last year Singspiel had 5 winners from 12 runners with his star performer being the Sweet Solera Stakes (LR) winner Muklah.
Last week Singspiel colt Secret Singer ran second to Gerald Leigh’s unbeaten In The Wings colt Act One in the Group 1 Prix Lupin. In The Wings, of course, is the sire of Singspiel. The Prix Lupin looks to be an excellent form race as Act One, who was scoring his second Group One victory, last season, he beat the Poule D'Essai des Poulains winner Landseer by a 1/2 length in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud.
Also last week, Singspiel colt In Time’s Eye was the runner-up in the Derrinstown Derby Trial (G3).
Another son of Singspiel, Agog, ran second to Dream Well’s half brother Sulamani in the Prix De L'Avre at Chantilly yesterday.
To top of an excellent week, Singspiel’s three-year-old colt, the Godolphin-trained Moon Ballad, led all the way to win the traditional Epsom Derby lead up race, the Dante Stakes (G2) at York. ‘That was a top-class progressive performance. He is a good honest horse,’ reported Godolphin’s racing manager, Simon Crisford, after the race.
‘We’ve gone a good gallop and he wasn’t stopping at the end,’ added jockey Jamie Spencer.
Moon Ballad is closely related to Godolphin’s Central Park (In The Wings) who went within half a length of leading all the way in the 1999 Melbourne Cup won by Rogan Josh. Central Park is a half brother to Moon Ballad’s dam Velvet Moon (Shaadi), winner of the Group 2 Lowther Stakes.
Singspiel now has had 21 runners, 12 winners, nine placed horses and six stakes horses.
