MM News For 14 May 2002

Gutsy Melbourne filly and Magic Millions graduate Tequila Knowledge confirmed her high ranking and booked a start in the Group One QTC Sires' Produce Stakes with her win in the Ken Russell Memorial (1300m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Tequila Knowledge, the equal favourite, made it two wins from three starts in a drama-charged race, downing Saddler's Silk by a half-length with Koochie a long neck away third.

The race was marred by two falls with jockey Dean Tanti dislodged from Theatregoer 200 metres after start and Jason Taylor coming to grief four strides before the winning post on Origin Hero. Both jockeys and horses escaped injury.

The Mike Moroney stable continues to be surprised with Tequila Knowledge who cost $40,000 at the Magic Millions Yearling Sales.

"She was on trial for the Sires' Produce today and we'll see how she comes through this race but I'd say she'll run in it now," said Moroney's brother Paul, who owns a 30 per cent share in the daughter of Blue Diamond winner Knowledge.

The Group One Sires' Produce (1400m) will be run at Eagle Farm on June 1.

"It was the first time she's gone right-handed and it's the first time she's seen the fence," Moroney said. "We'll see after the Sires' whether she runs in the T J Smith but I'd say she'll be be better in the spring and the Thousand Guineas is the race we're looking at back in Melbourne."

Moroney believed Tequila Knowledge is lucky to be racing so early in her career.

"She was very open in the knees when I bought her and I'm surprised she's even here," he said. "That's why I didn't pay up for her in the Magic Millions this year. I think she'll need to find about three lengths for the Sires' as I saw Lovely Jubly's win last Monday and I'll be surprised if anything beats her."
