MM News For 13 May 2002

Classy Magic Millions filly Miss Bussell may have earned a Queensland Oaks start next month with her impressive win in the Gold Coast Guineas (1400m) on Saturday.

Miss Bussell helped champion trainer Gai Waterhouse to the Guineas' quinella when she held on to down stablemate and favourite Alibarber by a half-length with Jar Jar Binks a further 3-1/2 lengths away third.

Waterhouse couldn't believe her luck after the race but was non-committal as to whether Miss Bussell, runner-up to Excellerator in last year's Magic Millions, would contest the $325,000 Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 1.

"I've got no doubt there'll be some great discussions about that in the next few days," Waterhouse said. "We were going to go for the Triple Crown back home and then her owner John Messara wanted to send her to Dubai but we ended up staying home. I can't believe my luck and it seems the Gold Coast is my happy hunting ground. We could have run in Sydney today but we decided to come here. It's been great as last week we couldn't win a race anywhere and now we've quinellaed this race."

South African jockey Glyn Schofield said he had a dream run throughout the race before the Danzero filly gave him a scare past the winning post when she took a sharp left turn and headed up the 1800-metre chute.
