At the conclusion of the two-day New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale today, a total of 266 lots had changed hands for an aggregate of $2,033,250. Colts averaged $9961 with fillies at $5,362. The overall average price reached $7,644 with a clearance rate of 81%.
At last years sale the weanling aggregate was a record $2,149,500, with a record average of $9,596. The warning to breeders could not have been clearer. Take a long critical look at the commercial appeal of the mare to be bred and be careful with the escalating cost of stallion fees. A swag of weanlings sold for less than the cost of a months agistment.
The highlight of the sale was the filly by one of Australasia’s hottest young sires, Carnegie (IRE), for $90,000. Sold through the draft of Haunui Farm, the filly is from the good mare Solo Performance (2nd Top Filly on Australasian Classification; winner of the Group 3 VATC Merson Cooper Stakes; 2nd Group 1 VATC Blue Diamond Stakes).
The Carnegie filly is a half sister to Solo Show (Group 2 VATC Quick Eze Stakes winner) and to the stakes winner in Western Australia, Clout. New Zealand Bloodstock as Agent purchased the filly for an Australian client.
The progeny of two first season sires sold well. Cambridge Stud’s Cape Cross averaged $19750 with six sold while Marju, who is now domiciled at Collingrove Stud, Victoria during the southern hemisphere season averaged exactly the same with four sold.
