 49. Another Danehill Classic

13/05/2002

The remarkable Danehill made it two Classic winners for the year when the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt Landseer (Danehill--Sabria, by Miswaki) powered home to win the Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) (G1) at Longchamp on Sunday. Danehill had already posted a classic success with Rock Of Gibraltar in the Sagitta 2,000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket last Saturday.

DANEHILL - Landseer made it classic
number two for Coolmore's champion
stallion this year
In fact it was Rock of Gibraltar’s good form that inspired confidence in the Landseer camp as that colt had finished second to Rock Of Gibraltar in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes last autumn.
Aided by a fast pace set by Sahara Desert (Green Desert) and Captain Rio (Pivotal) Landseer surged to the front with 300 metres remaining to defeat Medecis (Machiavellian--Renashaan (Fr), by Darshaan) by a length, with Bowman (Irish River (Fr)--Cherokee Rose (Ire), by Dancing Brave) three-quarters of a length back in third.

Originally sold as a weanling for 115,000gns at the 1999 Tattersalls December Sale, Landseer was resold at the 2000 Tattersalls Houghton Sale for 260,000gns.
Landseer’s dam Sabria (Miswaki) is an unraced half-sister to two stakes-placed winners, Mr Flood (Al Nasr) and King Sound (Caerleon), third in the Group 1 Grand Criterium. Sabria’s dam Flood (Riverman) is a half-sister to the outstanding Sabona (Lyphard) who get better with age, registering his first Grade 1 win, the Californian Stakes as a seven-year old as well as running second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), and Mervyn Leroy H. (G1), at the same age.

Hail Maggie, the dam of Flood is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Trillion (Hail To Reason) and champion broodmare Doff The Derby.
Trillion won the Prix Ganay (G1), Prix Dollar and Prix Foy however she ran an exasperating number of seconds including the French Oaks (G1), Prix Royal-Oak (G1), Grand Prix de Saint Cloud (G1), Prix D’Ispahan (G1), Prix de l”Arc de Triomphe (G1), Preis Von Europa (G1), Turf Classic (G1), Canadian International (G1), Washington D.C. International (G1), Oak Tree Invitational (G1), and the Prix Ganay (G1). At her second year at stud Trillion produced the champion filly Triptych (Riverman) winner of 13 races and over US$1.7 million including the Prix Marcel Boussac, Irish 2000 Guineas, Dubai Champion Stakes (G1), Prix Ganay (G1), Coronation Cup (G1), Phoenix Champion Stakes (G1).

In a remarkable broodmare career Doff The Derby produced champion 3yo colt Generous (Caerleon), winner of the Epsom Derby (G1), Dewhurst Stakes (G1), Irish Derby (G1) and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (G1) ; Epsom Oaks (G1) and Irish 1000gns winner Imagine (Sadler’s Wells); C.L. Weld Stakes (G3) and dual Group 1 placed Wedding Bouquet (Kings Lake); multiple stakes winning Japanese colt Osumi Tycoon (Last Tycoon); stakes-winner and group 1 placed Strawberry Roan (Sadler’s Wells), and multiple Grade winner Windy Triple K (Jacklin Klugman).
