What a wonderful money-spinner the Warwick Hailes trained Mr. Bureaucrat is proving for his connections. The six-year old gelding showed tremendous potential early in his career when he reeled off four consecutive wins in Sydney. However the son of Bureaucracy had to wait quite awhile to achieve his first stakes win which came in the Listed Frank Underwood Cup at Rosehill on January 13 2001.
BUREAUCRACY - sire of the
Hollindale Cup winner Mr. Bureaucrat
After his first stakes triumph Mr. Bureaucrat was spelled before resuming with a win in a Warwick Farm Welter on June 11. He followed that up with another stakes win in the Winter Stakes (LR), which closed out his five-year old season. Mr. Bureaucrat has since raced almost exclusively in stakes races, running fourth in the Warwick Stakes (G2), fifth in the Chelmsford Stakes (G2), fourth in the George Main Stakes (G2), fourth in the Toorak handicap (G1), fourth in the Waterford Crystal Mile (G2), ninth (beaten just over 3-lengths) in the Emirates Stakes (G1), seventh in the Star Kingdom Stakes (G3), fourth in a Flying welter at Randwick. Mr. Bureaucrat's racing style of getting well backed and flashing home has come against him more than once. Its not uncommon to see “checked in the run” appear in the formguide but since Warwick Hailes loaded his star charge on the float for Brisbane very little has gone wrong.
After a strong win in the Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (G2) at Eagle Farm on May 4 Mr. Bureaucrat backed up by winning Saturday’s Hollindale Stakes (G2) at the Gold Coast. Regular rider Adrian “Mouse” Robinson navigated a rails hugging run on Mr. Bureaucrat who once he saw daylight accelerated away to defeat Kaapstad Way by a half-length with a further 1-1/2 lengths to My Special Scorpio in third place.
Hailes watched in agony, as Mr. Bureaucrat seemed to be hemmed in with nowhere to go. "I thought he was a 100-1 on the turn but it was a great ride from Adrian Robinson," said Hailes. The effervescent Robinson was even more glowing in his praise for his ride describing it as the "ride of the year".
It was the win number 10 from 32 starts for Mr Bureaucrat whose earnings are just under half a million dollars, a healthy return on the $16,000 he cost at the 1997 Sydney Classic sale.
Mr. Bureaucrat is proving a wonderful advertisement for his underrated sire Bureaucracy (Lord Ballina Tulla Doll by Oncidium). An outstanding Group One performer himself Bureaucracy has continued to churn out the winners since he first entered stud at Yarraman Park in 1992. Subsequently transferred to Kooringal Stud Wagga, Bureaucracy has sired the winners of almost $7 million including the stakes-winners Noircir, Normal Practice, Desk Top Lover, Crafty Beau, Regulations, Pride Of Tarlton and Mr. Bureaucrat. Surely there could be few better value stallions anywhere in Australia at a service fee of $6,600.
