Coolmore Stud has suffered a disastrous loss with the death of Danehill’s brilliant Group One winner Mozart.

Mozart, who was booked to come to Australia next spring for his first shuttle season in NSW, died on May 12 at Coolmore’s Irish base where he had been serving his first northen hemipshere season.

Coolmore reported that the four-year-old died from the intestinal complaint of non-responsive acute colitis.

Mozart raced in the colours of Michael Tabor, who described the stallion as a “fabulous” racehorse.

A Coolmore statement said Mozart received intensive veterinary treatment for 24 hours before his deathy in an attempt to save his life.

As a juvenile Mozart won the Tattersalls Houghton Stakes at Newmarket before finishing fourth behind Tobougg in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes at the same track.

He opened his three-year-old season with a third in the 2000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown and an third in the Tetrach Stakes at The Curragh before running second to stablemate Black Minnaloushe in the Irish 2000 Guineas.

He then reverted to sprints and at his next start won the G3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot over sevben furlongs before dropping back to six furlongs to record a brilliant win in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket.

The colt then completed the major sporint double of UK racing by taking the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York before ending his racing career with an 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Belmont Park last October.

Coolmore Australia recently announced that Mozart would be standing at its Hunter Valley property next spring at a fee of $49,500.

It is yet to be announced if his place on the Coolmore roster will be taken by another shuttle sire.
