 35. Kris S. Dies

09/05/2002

Shortly after the death of the legendry Seattle Slew, Kentucky has lost another one of its stalwarts Kris. S. The 25-year-old stallion, was euthanized Tuesday at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Kentucky, due to complications from a neck injury.

While Seattle Slew was assured of taking his place at a leading stud by virtue of his remarkable racing career it was more of an early battle for Kris S. As a racehorse Kris S. had started 5 times for 3 wins and 1 second for earnings of $53,350, with his lone stakes victory coming in the Listed Bradbury Stakes at Santa Anita.

There was plenty to like about the bloodlines of Kris S., a son of one of the very best racehorses to grace the English turf, Roberto, out of Sharp Queen a daughter of the wonderful influence for soundness and stamina Princequillo The combination of his race record and breeding was good enough for Kris S to demand a service fee of $3,500 at Meadowbrook Farm, Florida in 1982.

The first few years at stud for Kris were a bit of a battle. His first crop numbered 28 foals, the second 26, the third 18 and the fourth 19. By then the progeny of Kris S. were hitting the racetrack and winning stakes races. From his first crop of 28 foals 25 got to the races and 20 were winners including five stakes winners. Kris. S was on his way to the top.

Inevitably the majority of promising stallions find their way to Kentucky and that was the course for Kris S. He was relocated prior to the ’94 season to stand at Prestonwood Farm, which was renamed WinStar when the Preston brothers sold the farm in 2000. His reputation continued to grow with the likes of Breeders’ Cup winners: Brocco, Prized, Hollywood Wildcat and Soaring Softly, the latter two of whom were also Eclipse Award Champions. Hollywood Wildcat’s second foal, War Chant, won the 2000 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1).

Prized, Kris S.’s leading earner, shuttles between Japan and New Zealand where he sired 2001 STC Rosehill Guineas winner Sale Of Century. Brocco, who currently stands in Japan, sired the duel Group One winner Miss Pennymoney from his 6-years of service at Arrowfield Stud.

Widden Stud’s magnificently conformed young stallion Dr Fong was one of the very best turf performers sired by Kris S. Dr Fong proved himself one of Europe’s top milers when defeating Woodland Stud’s triple Group One winner Desert Prince (Green Desert) in the St James Palace Stakes (G1) and was nosed out by that horse in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot. Dr. Fong had enough class to carry him to victory in the 2000m Prix Eugene Adam (G2) at Saint-Cloud.

Kris S. stood for a fee of $150,000 live foal in 2001, a fair indication that he had battled his way to the very top of North America’s most commercial stallions. Two of his young stallion sons Kissin Kris and You And I, have sired important stakes winners in the U.S.

Ranked third on the North American general sire and juvenile sire lists in 1993, Kris S. sired 63 individual stakes winners, including 30 group/graded stakes winners, from his first 17 crops for lifetime earnings of over $49 million.
