 34. South African Leading Buyer At Broodmare Sale

South African breeder Lionel Cohen of Odessa Stud emerged as the leading buyer at the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale. He will be taking back to South Africa 18 choice broodmares at a cost of $2,358,000. 

Cohen’s purchased 5 of the 23 broodmares sold for $200,000 or above including the Danehill mare Rose Or Gina, a winning half-sister to stakes-winners Exclusive Halo and Miss Jugah, in foal to Fusaichi Pegasus, for $325,000; Vain Hill, stakes placed half-sister to Keltrice, by Danehill and in foal to Red Ransom for $300,000; The Legend, a city winning daughter by Danehill out of the former champion 3yo filly Northwood Plume, in foal to Thunder Gulch for $240,000; Fleureel, a full-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Jezabeel, by Zabeel and in foal to Flying Spur, for $210,000; Star Of Grosvenor a daughter of Last Tycoon and a half-sister to Champion European Sprinter Carmine Lake, in foal to Spectrum for $200,000. 

All the mares will be shipped back to South Africa where the majority will be served by Cohen’s new acquisition, Val Royal (Royal Academy) the record breaking winner of last years Breeders’ Cup mile.
