Record Breaking Broodmare Sale Concludes

The Australian Broodmare Sale concluded at Newmarket today, with the final session bringing the overall gross to a massive $26,875,800. This is the highest aggregate in the history of the sale, bettering the old mark set in 2000 when 561 mares fetched $26,518,950. This year a total of 614 fillies and mares were sold over the three days at an average price of $43,772.
Managing Director, Reg Inglis was thrilled with proceedings, "It's been a fabulous sale, just amazing, we couldn't have wished for a better result. Yesterday's session was probably the strongest we've ever experienced at this sale."
"Given the conservative atmosphere that prevailed at the major yearling sales earlier this year, the strength of the market here, particularly at the top end, has been a pleasant surprise to most people."
Some 66 mares fetched $100,000 and above, and the clearance rate of 84% indicated a good result for vendors, many of whom sold mares for well in excess of their reserve.
Top price at today's session was Lot 691, the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Miss Denmark, covered by Thunder Gulch (USA) in her first season at stud. Offered by Widden Stud as agent, she went to prominent owner and breeder Bruce Reid for $250,000.
