While Arrowfield stallions enjoyed an exceptional week last week the last 24 hours has been a series of disappointments and frustration.
UNBRIDLED'S SONG
Wood Memorial (G1) winner Buddha, second favourite for the Kentucky Derby, has been scratched after he appeared lame Friday morning. The son of former Arrowfield Stud stallion Unbridled’s Song was favoring his left front foot when taken out of his stall shortly after 5 a.m. to go to the track. The colt is to undergo a full veterinary examination as the cause of the problem is at this stage unknown.
In Japan another son of Unbridled’s Song, Agnes Sonic, had to settle for second place behind Telegnosis (Tony Bin) in the $1.3 million Group 1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo today.
Arrowfield Stud’s new recruit Dehere sired the favourite for the Kentucky Oaks, Take Charge Lady. The outstanding 3yo filly was beaten into second place by the fast finishing Farda Amiga (Broad Brush) whose dam Fly North (Pleasant Colony) is a three-quarter sister to Irish Derby (G1) and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (G1) winner St. Jovite.
The disappointment in the Kentucky Oaks was Imperial Gesture, a daughter of Vinery Stud’s Langfuhr, who failed to emulate her half-sister, Kentucky Oaks winner Sardula. The disappointment for Langfuhr was tempered somewhat by the run of Traci’s Wild (Langfuhr--Wild for Traci, by Wild Again) an excellent third in the Edgewood Stakes, a non graded stakes race on the Oaks program.
The Grade 3 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Down was an altogether different affair for shuttle stallions. Legislator (Royal Academy--Quite Honestly, by Believe It) led home a 1-2-3 for Coolmore Stud when he defeated Stage Call (Ire) (Sadler's Wells--Humble Eight, by Seattle Battle) and Orchard Park (Hennessy--Blue Begum, by With Approval).
