Timber Trader; Floral Dynamite; Lord Essex; Yammer; With Class
* TIMBER TRADER, a Woodman colt bred from the Sir Tristram mare Glenview, has won the G1 South African Derby at Turffontein .
Timber Trader was purchased by his trainer Gary Alexander at New Zealand’s 2000 Karaka Yearling Sale, for ly $NS47,500.
He was bred and sold by Tim Bodle of Whakanui Stud after he purchased his stakeswinning dam Glenview for $105,000 at the 1997 Australian broodmare Sale at Newmarket.
Glenview, a daughter of NZ Oaks winner Zephyrn, won the G2 Surround Stakes and G2 Tea Rose Stakes when she was trained in Sydney by Bart Cummings.
The Turffontein meeting, the premier race day of the year in South Africa, also featured a G3 win by a Volksraad three-year-old Appeal Process, his seventh win from 14 starts.
* FLORAL Dynamite, the highest priced colt ever sold in Hong Kong, won on debut at Sha Tin on April 27.
The son of Danehill and Caraniya - a mare bred by the Aga Khan – brought $HK4.5 million when he topped the 2001 Piaget International sale last December.
Floral Dynamite was originally sold as yearling at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2001 for $600,000.
* THE win by Lord Essex in the G2 Wyndham Estate Cup at Doomben on April 27 was perfect timing.
With the 2002 Australian Select Weanling Sale to be held at Newmarket on Friday, Lord Essex is surely the best advertisement for the auction as was purchased as an Easter weanling in 1997 for just $17,500 before being successfully re-offered for $50,000 as a yearling.
Friday’s sale features a close relation to Lord Essex.. Rothwell Park Thoroughbreds as agent, will offer a colt by Desert King from the unraced mare Bessolic, a half-sister to Lord Essex.
The Australian Broodmare Sale starting on Sunday will see
Bessolic also go under the hammer. She has been served by young Danehill stallion Springsteen, a stakes-winning half-brother to Marauding.
* YAMMER, who produced an excellent trial for the Adelaide Cup with his win in G3 Rain Lover Plate at Victoria Park on April 27, is yet another classy stayer by Bellotto.
Bellotto has sired his share of stayers, including Bullwinkle (SA Derby) and My Brightia (VRC Oaks).
His dam, the good producer Don't Stop Talking, is a half-sister to Glastonbury, winner of G1 AJC Metropolitan and successful up to 3000 metres.
Don't Stop Talking is also a half-sister to champion filly and AJC Oaks winner Bounding Away, which all adds up to Yammer having a pedigree that should see him cope with the Adelaide Cup distance.
* VICTORIAN- based sire With Class proved to be a real surprise packet at the Autumn Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction with four of his yearlings selling at an average price of $35,500.
He provided the sale topper, a colt from good racemare Constant Pressure, puchased by Pastore Pty Ltd for $60,000.
Another of his colts, this one from Good Lassie, a half-sister to former brilliant sprinter With Me, made $46,000 to the bid of Cranbourne trainer Barry Burke.
Burke knows a thing or two about the With Class stock, having saddled the talented filly Lady Sophia (also by With Class) to win at Sandown the day before the sale.
Lady Sophia herself is a graduate of the Autumn Yearling Sale, having been purchased last year for just $9,000.
With Class is an unraced son of champion American sire Deputy Minister, best known as the sire of Dehere.
His pedigree is without peer, being a half-brother to Canadian Horse of the Year, Dance Smartly, from champion race filly Classy 'n Smart.
His oldest progeny are two year olds and from just 11 starters, eight have picked up a cheque including metropolitan winners Deputy Head and Lady Sophia.
With Class stands at Sanctuary Lodge at a fee of $4,950.
