Imported Fappiano mare Veronical topped the opening session of the Australian Broodmare Sale at Newmarket on May 5.
Veronical, in foal to Octagonal, is a half-sister to the outstanding sire Broad Brush, sire of last Friday's Kentucky Oaks winner Farda Amiga and is the dam of Bluebird's VRC Oaks placegetter and G3 winner Lan Kwai Fong.
She was purchased by bloodstock agent John Freyer for $500,000 and helped push the aggregate for day one of the three-day sale to more than $9 million.
Veronical was offered as part of the dispersal of five mare from Bill Duthy's Sharondon Park Stud in South Australia.
A total of 218 lots were sold for $9,502,050 at an average of $43,587 with top class Queensland race mare Dynamic Love bringing the second highest price of $450,000.
By Brave Warrior, Dynamic Love was sold immediately after Veronical to the bid of agent John Foote on behalf of Mr. John Westneat.
Dynamic Love, who was offered as a racing and breeding prospect, has won seven races including the G2 Stan Fox Stakes at Randwick.
La Brillante, by Sir Tristram and in foal to Thunder Gulch was sold to New Zealand's Windosr Park Stud for $380,000). The dam of stakeswinner Philidor is an unraced sister to Kaapstad and a three-quarter sister to Octagonal and Mouawad from the great Eight Carat family.
The only other sale above $300,000 was the bid of Swettenham Stud for Unbridled Victory, an imported Unbridled mare in foal to Grand Lodge.
Highlights of the second day of the sale will include the G1 winner Piavonic in foal to Fusaicihi Pegasus, Northerly's dam North Bell in foal to Flying Spur and Balletomane, the dam of Breeders Cup Mile winner Silic, in foal to Fusaichi Pegasus.
William Inghlis and Son managing director Reg Inglis was satisfied with today's result, but indicated the best is yet to come.
"The market was very strong today and it's certainly pleasing to have such a good international presence in attendance. We've got some great mares still to come and there will be plenty to look forward to over the next two days."
