North Sydney businessman and prominent racehorse owner John O'Mara has followed up the acquisition of the well known Darling Downs stud Ellinthorpe by being the major buyer at the stud's dispersal sale conducted by the Magic Millions company on the property on Sunday, May 30.

Mr O'Mara purchased twelve of the 87 lots in the catalogue including nine weanlings in the first crop of the stud's resident young sire Eternity Range, a very talented galloper who was ranked one of France's top two-year-olds in 1995, a year in which he had a win over the season's champion Loup Solitaire and a Group One placing to his credit.

The quality of Eternity Range's foals helped persuade John O'Mara to buy not only the stud but also the sire when they came on the market earlier this year. Near Allora between Warwick and Toowoomba, Ellinthorpe was established by long time Queensland breeder Bob Thompson. Mr Thompson is retiring from the industry

Mr O'Mara, an owner who has had horses with Bart Cummings, Paul Perry and Morphettville's Mark Kavanagh, plans to develop Ellinthorpe as a base for not only stallion services but also for his own and client's mares booked to go to Hunter Valley and other interstate or local sires. He feels that the mild winter climate experienced at Ellinthorpe is beneficial for mares and their offspring.
