 11. Big Week For Arrowfield

01/05/2002

By: Mark Smith

Arrowfield Stud stallions have been having a magnificent run of late. Just look at how all Arrowfield stallions with runners performed last week.

DANZERO - A South Australian Oaks G1 plan was unveiled for Champagne Miss after she completed a winning hat-trick for her trainer Len Treloar in the Azzurro Hcp at Sandown. Cranbourne-based Treloar said Champagne Miss was developing into a tough competitor. "She wasn't strong enough last preparation. I took her to the provincials to give her confidence," Treloar said. Danzero may also have another Classic contender in the shape of Storm Zero who targets the Queensland Derby. Two winners on the weekend who are earmarked for better things are Spadanza and Ozioziozi. Trainer Steve Richards is keen for Spadanza to take on older company next and is certain that his charge is up to Stakes Company while Alan Denham has Ozioziozi preparing for a Listed stakes event in the next month.

DEHERE - Classic hopes for this stallion also with his son Easyfromthegitgo maintaining his trek on the Kentucky Derby trail with a solid 3rd in the Lexington Stakes G2. Bumped early by an outsider, Easyfromthegitgo never really got a clean shot at the winner but will go to Louisville with a good chance in what is a fairly even bunch of three year olds. Dehere's daughter, the outstanding Take Charge Lady who is considered by many as the best three year old colt or filly in America, is unlikely to contest the Derby opting for the Kentucky Oaks G1 the day before but will meet the boys in the Preakness Stakes G1 at Pimlico. In Australia Dehere is of course the sire of the highly talented Defier, but also has the likes of recent winners Cousy and Picholine contesting
stakes races at their next starts.

END SWEEP

END SWEEP - Sired his 21st stakes winner when his two-year-old colt Sweet Promises remained undefeated in winning the Valid Appeal Stakes LR at Gulfstream Park. Sweet Promises, who had handled his debut a month earlier over the same course and distance by 2 ½ lengths, stepped up to stakes class and despite being inconvenienced at the start, showed blistering speed to recover and hold off the challengers in the run to the wire. While it is early in the juvenile season, the success of Sweet Promises makes End Sweep the Leading 2YO Sire of America.

FLYING SPUR - Trainer Gerald Ryan's hand for the $1 million AAMI Stradbroke Handicap G1 was boosted by another exciting win by promising sprinter Gold Class at Doomben. International jockey Steven King was so impressed by the win that he has already put his hand up for the ride on the sprinter in the Stradbroke. Gold Class made light of 60.5kg to stroll home in a restricted class event over 1350m, taking his
record to six wins from eight starts. King has told Ryan he will strip 3kg in weight to ride Gold Class in the Stradbroke, where he is set to carry only 49kg. "Any horse who can win like that with that kind of weight has a big future," King said. "He's the ideal Stradbroke horse." Meanwhile the Ivan Allan trained Firebolt, another colt by Flying Spur ran a solid 3rd in the Chairman's Prize G1 in Hong Kong behind the Arrowfield graduate Charming City and Flying Sparks posted his 5th win to date with a sterling effort at the Gold Coast and is certain to be looking for a stakes race shortly.

FUJI KISEKI - had a stakes placed runner in the shape of the Arrowfield bred Fuji Dancer midweek who finished 3rd in the Anzac Day Stakes LR. In Japan he continues on his merry way with two stakes winners in the last week. Tenshino Kiseki won the Shumpu Stakes LR over 1000m on the grass at Niigata bringing her record to five wins from nine starts while Osumi Cosmo won the Sweet Pea Stakes LR over 1800m at Tokyo race course. The winner of the Sweet Pea Stakes is given priority entry to the Japanese Oaks G1 to be run early next month. Fuji Kiseki is currently the 5th Leading Sire of Japan.

HURRICANE SKY - Emerged with two winter carnival hopes in the shape of Raining and Past The Skies. Raining blitzed her older opponents in winning the Australian Building Adhesive Hcp by a widening 4 ½ lengths in 1:08.85. The daughter of Hurricane Sky looks a certain stakes performer for her trainer John Collins. Past the Skies etched out a determined win for her trainer Cliff Brown who is contemplating a late Brisbane campaign with her.

ARROWFIELD GRADUATES - the past two weeks have seen Arrowfield Graduates dominate throughout the world. Firstly Charming City bolted away from his rivals to score by five lengths in the Chairman's Sprint Prize G1 in the sizzling time of 1m 8.8 seconds. The David Hayes trained star collected an $HK800,000 bonus for taking two legs of the champion sprint series, in addition to the winning purse of $HK2.65 million. Well known bloodstock agent Henry Plumptre selected and purchased Charming City for $200,000 at the 1998 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for his Hong Kong based client Mr C.S. Ling. It was the first bloodstock investment for Mr Ling and what a fabulous experience it has been. Charming City has won nine races and been placed eight times from 29 starts, winning prize money in excess of $A3.7 million. Charming City was ridden to victory by South Australian jockey Dwayne Dunn, who was thrilled to finally take out his first Group One. "It's great to win a Group One at last and it's been a good day at the office," said an elated Dunn. "I've been close a few times in Group Ones in Australia, but I don't think I've been on anything under 10-1 and you've got to get the good horses to have a chance." Charming City flew out of the gates from his nice barrier, before settling beautifully just behind the pace. "Charming City nearly got caught speeding," joked trainer, David Hayes. "That was an awesome performance, probably his best ever. The others have just caught Charming City on a freaky day." Later in the afternoon, another Arrowfield Stud product, Chariot of Storm notched his third win in just six starts for the Tony Cruz stable. The promising three year old is by Unbridled's Song (USA) from Don't Stop Talking, a half-sister to champion two-year old Bounding Away. Don't Stop Talking is also the dam of the Tony Noonan trained Yammer winner of the G3 Rain Lover Plate in South Australia. A tough competitor when he is firing, the Arrowfield bred Yammer is set for a crack at the Adelaide Cup G1 next month. Finally the Arrowfield bred and raced filly Cassis, became the 5th two year old stakes winner to be bred by Arrowfield, and the 39th stakes winner to be bred, raised or sold by Arrowfield since relocating to our new property outside of Scone in 1995. Cassis follows Flashed, Sunday Joy, Suntagonal (South Africa) and Zoometric as Arrowfield juvenile stakes winners.
