 01. Singleton Pays $825,000 For Universal Prince's Dam

01/05/2002

By Tony White

Advertising guru and thoroughbred enthusiast John Singleton paid what is believed to be a South Australian record of $825,000 for the dam of Universal Prince, Biscay Bird, at the Lindsay Park dispersal sale.

AJC Australian Derby winner Universal Prince, last season's Australian three-year-old of the year, is currently campaigning in Asia with his next start in the Singapore Gold Cup on Saturday week.

Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley secured Biscay Bird (by Bluebird), the highest priced lot of 132 mares sold, in foal to supersire Danehill.

Other notable purchases were local Ian Barton securing stakes winning mare Visual Displays in foal to American stallion Agnes World for $340,000 and Salieri mare Barossa Valley, knocked down to Barton's Kanowna Stud for $110,000.
Barossa Valley is in foal to Rory's Jester.

Ron and Debbie Gilbert of Highgrove Stud in Queensland paid $200,000 for Angelic Smile, a Dehere mare with a positive pregnancy test to Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.
Hong Kong-based trainer and Lindsay Park co-owner David Hayes was delighted with the results of the sale conducted by Magic Millions.
