Tasmanian onslaught

02/03/2002

It’s a big couple of days down Tassie way. Today sees the staging of Tasmania’s annual yearling sale, with 103 youngsters set to go under the hammer, while tomorrow is the older horses’ turn at Launceston’s Mowbray racetrack, a 10-race programme highlighted by the $202,500 AAMI Launceston Cup-G3.

The AAMI Launceston Cup, one of three black-type events, has attracted the interest of interstate trainers, in particular Michael Moroney (Imax and Vitelli), Gai Waterhouse (Zareyev), Ken Sweeney (Astrolante) and Tony Wildman (Bondi Iceberg), while Graeme Rogerson will start Gypsy Geena in the Carlton Draught Tasmanian Oaks-LR.

The mainland is beginning to take much more notice of the Apple Isle, with the Tasmanian industry producing, in recent years, the likes of multiple Group winner My Sienna (sold for $3,000 at the 1998 Tasmanian Yearling Sale) and Weasel Will, winner of close to $700,000.

The results of the Launceston Cup and a review of the Tasmanian Yearling Sale will appear in next week’s issue of Inside Racing Online.
