Victory Finds Winning Vein

04/03/2002

Ultra professional filly VICTORY VEIN (2001 Sires' Produce PI$32,500) delivered another knockout blow to arch rival CHUCKLE (2000 Select Weanling PI$130,000) to win the STC Sweet Embrace Stakes Gr 3.
"She's beaten Chuckle three times now and she's entitled to some recognition," said trainer, Bede Murray. "If she's not the best filly racing, I'd like to know where the others are!"

Victory Vein is bred and raced by Tony Hartnell's Meringo Stud Farm syndicate, who decided to retain the filly when she failed to make her reserve of $40,000 at the inaugural Sires Produce Yearling Sale. She has now won $315,395 and is clearly deserving of the $110,000 late entry fee into the Golden Slipper.
Meringo Stud purchased her dam Protective at the 1996 Easter Broodmare Sale for just $10,000. The Opera Prince mare was part of a Woodlands Stud reduction and comes from the "Ambassadress" family that has produced stakes-winners Balmoral, Aspirations, Upwards and more recently the smart runners Grampians and Cadastral.
Protective has produced five winners to date, with the next best after Victory Vein being the top class Singapore based galloper The Jolly Roger, a stakes-winner of more than $A600,000. She has a weanling filly by Naturalism and has been covered by Mr Henrysee's Group One winning son Mr Innocent.
Meringo Stud have entered four yearlings in Sires' Produce this year, three by Victory Vein's sire Mr Henrysee (USA) and a filly by Thunder Gulch (USA).
