 47. Great Season For Inglis Graduates

18/06/2002

The Brisbane Cup on July 10 marked the end of Group One racing in Australia for 2001/02 season and another successful season at the top level for graduates of the William Inglis and Son sale ring.

The final tally reveals a total of 14 individual Inglis sale graduates collected 16 Group One trophies throughout Australia during 2001/2002.

“Group One competition is what it's all about and the strength of Inglis graduates was seen to advantage at the elite level of Australian racing,” said Tara Madgwick of William Inglis and Son.

Juvenile racing showcased a wealth of talent, highlighted by champion two year old filly Victory Vein, Piallaging and Bel Esprit.

Victory Vein was the bargain that got away as she was passed in at the 2001 Sires' Produce Sale for just $32,500.

Star Melbourne youngster Pillaging, recently sold to Hong Kong for a reported seven figure sum, came out of the 2001 Classic Sale for only $45,000 and Bel Esprit was the absolute bargain of the season as he cost only $9000 at the same sale.

The three year old classics unearthed some high class performances featuring dual Group One winner Magical Miss and Miss Viking.

They proved that big prices to deliver top class winners as Viking Ruler, successful in the Spring Champion Stakes before his season was cut short by injury, was the sale topping colt at the 2000 Easter Sale and Magical Miss, the VRC Oaks and Thousand Guineas heroine, was sold at the same sale for $520,000.

West Australian three year olds were dominated by the tough staying filly Honor Lap (2000 Premier $25,000), winner of both WATC Derby and Oaks, while the Newcastle raider County Tyrone (2000 Classic $70,000) ended the season on abigh for the Inglis sophomores by capturing the Queensland Derby.

Last year's AJC Derby winner Universal Prince (1999 Easter $80,000) made the Group One victor's list again this year with a hard fought win in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

Another to join the list for a second year in a row was Mr Murphy (1999 Easter $300,000), back again courtesy of a dashing win in the Eat Well Live Well Cup at Caulfield.

Evergreen sprinter Toledo (1995 Easter $90,000), a three time Group One winner in a career spanning 46 starts, appears here for the last time, having been retired after winning the Australia Stakes.

Outstanding gallopers Rubitano (1999 Premier $95,000), Lord Essex (1997 Easter Weanling $17,500), Mr Bureaucrat (1997 Classic $16,000) and Dress Circle (1998 Easter $100,000) also joined the Group One winners club for the first time.
The Group One success of Inglis graduates has not been confined to Australia.

Overseas Group One wins have been recorded by Emerald Dream (1998 Easter $275,000) in New Zealand, top sprinter Charming City (1998 Easter $200,000) in Hong Kong and champion mare Laisserfaire (1998 Easter $575,000), who ended her glittering career in South Africa with three consecutive Group One wins.
