 17. Queensland Secures Bargain Price Son Of Danehill

06/06/2002

Breeders looking for a bargain priced son of Danehill this season should consider a newcomer to Raheen Stud. The regally bred Oarsman (Danehill-Rowa (GB) by Great Nephew) was consigned by Coolmore Stud, as agent, to the 1999 Australian Easter Yearling sale but was passed in when bidding fell $25,000 short of the colts $350,000 reserve.

Trained by Bill Mitchell Oarsman only faced the starter three times. His depth of breeding should ensure support at stud as he features as his fifth dam Malindi, a stakes-winning sister to the mighty Nasrullah.

Oarsman’s dam Rowa, a stakes-placed daughter of Great Nephew, sire of English Derby winners, Grundy and Shergar, is a sister to stakes-winner My Fair Niece and a half-sister to another four stakes-winners including champion racemare Oh So Sharp (Kris), top filly on the 1985 European 3yo Classification with 7 wins including The One Thousand Guineas (G1), The Oaks (G1) and The St. Leger (G1). Oh So Sharp is the dam of Prix St Alaray (G1) winner Rosefinch (Blushing Groom) and is the grand-dam of triple Group One winner, 1996 champion European stayer Shantou.

Another half-sister to Rowa, the multiple Group Two winner Roussalka (Habitat), is the great granddam of Ameerat (Mark Of Esteem), which won last year’s English Two Thousand Guineas for Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum.

Oarsman’s third dam Chandelle (Swaps), a half-sister to the good French racehorse and influential sire Prince Taj, is a daughter of Nasrullah’s sister and Royal Charger’s three-quarter sister Malindi.

Malindi and Nasrullah as well Dodoma, a mare that exerted a significant influence on breeding in Australia, were out of Mumtaz Begum, a daughter of the peerless Mumtaz Mahal. Dodoma is the dam of the influential Australian based sires Jambo and Nilo and the granddam of Coeur Volant. Dodoma can been found in the pedigrees of modern day stallions Canny Lad, Covetous, Carry A Smile, Nediym and Weasel Clause.

Lady Juror, a half-sister to Mumtaz Mahal, produced the influential sire Fair Trial and another half-sister Joyous is the ancestress of the Golden Slipper second Shovhog, one of the most sought after young sons of Danehill, which stands at the world renowned Widden Stud.

Oarsman, a half-brother to the European Stakes-winner Laila Alawi (Mtoto) will be available to breeders at a bargain basement price of $2,200 at Raheen Stud Warwick Queensland. At that price he will eagerly be sought after by breeders looking to access a son of leading sire of sires Danehill from a pre-potent female family.
