Don Nancarrow's Clearvale Stud in the fertile Bylong Valley on the western fringe of the Hunter Valley could have a new Spectacular Spy in Shepherd's Field, the sire of Superfine, a winner of his fifth race when successful in an1800 metre event for three-year-olds at Randwick on Saturday.

American bred Shepherd's Field is by the same sire as Spectacular Spy, namely Spectacular Bid, and was welcomed as a replacement for Spectacular Spy when he died just as he was making a name as a winner getter of consequence. However, he left seven crops of foals which have provided about 150 winners of 700 races and $11million, the major contributors including Quick Flick, Cangronde, Ab Initio and Legal Agent.

Spectacular Spy was a three-quarter brother to another good Spectacular Bid sire in the Baramul Stud located Bite the Bullet. A quality of the progeny of these two sires has been soundness and durability and they appear to be traits transmitted by Shepherd's Field. Superfine for one has raced 26 times in17 months.

One of America's better two-year-olds of1993,Shepherd's Field had already had a light season at stud when he moved to Clearvale and he has had restricted opportunity. Despite this he has been a source of a good supply of winners including Superfine, Crepitate (won Sunshine Coast), Prince Shep (four wins including two at Newcastle - lost one on protest; nose second Canterbury and close third Rosehill in recent weeks), Dark Frost (Gold Coast), Shepherd's Lil (Cessnock, Muswellbrook; placed Wyong, Newcastle), Missy Flanders (Gold Coast), Jack's Rose (Sunshine Coast, Ipswich) and Spectfield (Toowoomba).

Unwanted on a reserve of $5000 when offered for Don Nancarrow at the 2000 Scone yearling sale, Saturday's Randwick winner Superfine is now trained and raced by Terry Ryan,Warwick Farm. A grey like his sire, he is from Berninis Escape, a daughter of the Zephyr Bay sire Elounda Bay and the Vain Sydney winner Escape Me Never
