 86. Inglis Sales Produce 120 Stakes Winners

29/07/2002

The 2001-2002 season was another stunning triumph for graduates of sales conducted by leading auction house William Inglis and Son Pty Ltd. Pedigree guru Tara Madgwick (don’t miss her reports every Saturday on Racing to The Max) and William Inglis Public Relations and Marketing Manager Melissa O’Gorman, look back through the season pinpointing the sales that produced nearly 120 stakes-winners this season in New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, Macau, Singapore and of course Australia.

AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE.
Easter accounted for more than 50 stakes-winners and confirmed it's international reputation, producing Group One winners in South Africa (LAISSERFAIRE 1998 Easter $575,000 and SUNTAGONAL 2001 Easter $80,000), Hong Kong (CHARMING CITY 1998 Easter $200,000) and New Zealand (EMERALD DREAM 1998 Easter $275,000).

High priced Easter purchases proved their worth on the track led by saletopper VIKING RULER (2000 Easter $1,500,000) and high class filly MAGICAL MISS (2000 Easter $520,000), who both scored Group One wins last spring before being sidelined in the autumn. Perennial Easter favourite SHOGUN LODGE (1998 Easter $200,000) added further riches to his already bulging prizemoney haul, lifting the grand total to within a whisker of $4.5 million.

Talented filly ELEGANT FASHION (2000 Easter $95,000) proved a first class investment for her owners in the latter part of the season, winning four races and more than $800,000 in prizemoney. While bargain buy PRINCE OF WAR (2000 Easter $30,000), the cheapest of all the Easter stakes-winners collected some $200,000 for his lucky connections.

CLASSIC YEARLING SALE.
Most vendors and buyers would agree that Classic is the most improved yearling sale in the country and results on the racetrack would certainly back up that sentiment.

Classic provided 19 stakes-winners including four Group One winners, ranging from brilliant juveniles BEL ESPRIT (2001 Classic $9,000) and PILLAGING (2001 Classic $45,000), to Queensland Derby victor COUNTY TYRONE (2000 Classic $70,000) and winter weight-for-age star MR BUREAUCRAT (1997 Classic $16,000).

Top colts CHOISIR (2001 Classic $55,000), winner of $863,900, and HALF HENNESSY (2001 Classic $65,000), winner of $352,350, also measured up to the best of their generation.

The girls were not left out either, with outstanding females FAIR EMBRACE (2000 Classic $75,000), winner of $881,450, and MISS ZOE (1998 Classic $15,000), winner of $541,308, giving their connections plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Blue Diamond winner Bel Esprit, a winner of five races from six starts and $1,043,000, must rank as one the all time great saleyard gifts, but for the cheapest Classic stakes-winner, it's the smart three year old BULLETPROOF BILLY (2000 Classic $8,000) who gets the nod.

MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE.
Victoria's showcase yearling sale was the source of 18 stakes-winners and like Classic, all were purchased for less than $100,000.

Newmarket Handicap winner RUBITANO (1999 Premier $95,000) and top WA staying filly HONOR LAP (2000 Premier $25,000) proved to be great flagbearers for the sale, reflecting the diversity of horses available at Premier.

Several talented three year olds have emerged from Premier, highlighted by GOLD LOTTEY (2000 Premier $50,000), winner of $410,775, and GREY SONG (2000 Premier $25,000), winner of $320,800. While spring prospects look bright for promising two year old fillies BEFORE TOO LONG (2001 Premier $40,000) and LASHED (2001 Premier $40,000).

Bargain priced galloper LITTLE DOZER (1999 Premier $14,000) gave his connections more than just a few thrills, lifting his overall career earnings to $375,500. However it was handy performer BUMP AND RUN (1999 Premier $10,000) who stood as the cheapest stakes-winner to be purchased from Premier.

WEANLING SALES [AUSTRALIAN SELECT (EASTER), JUNE (MELBOURNE), WINTER (SYDNEY)].
The weanling market has made considerable gains in recent years as vendors move to support the concept of selling weanlings with a better quality product. Improved results on the track are a direct reflection and some 15 stakes-winners have arrived via the various weanling sales.

Outstanding sprinter miler LORD ESSEX (1997 Easter Weanling $17,500) enjoyed every success this season, making an impressive comeback from injury that had him on the bench for nearly a year.

South African juvenile star SUNTAGONAL, mentioned earlier as an Easter graduate, was also originally purchased at the 2000 Australian Select Weanling Sale for $55,000 before being successfully re-offered as a yearling at Easter.

Other weanling purchases to make their mark during the season include; KINGSGATE (1998 June Weanling $16,000), STRATEGIC IMAGE (1999 Easter Weanling $33,000), FLASHED (2000 Australian Select Weanling $65,000), FUJI DANCER (2000 Australian Select Weanling $45,000), STORMCAT ACADEMY (1999 Winter Weanling $7,000), PALIDAMAH (1999 Winter Weanling $3,500) and Australian record priced weanling PRINCESA (1998 Easter Weanling $400,000).

Last year, the pocket dynamo Palidamah was revealed as the cheapest stakes-winner of the season sold by William Inglis and Son Ltd. This year however, she has been pipped at the post by West Australian based three year old LORD MASON, a $3,000 purchase at the 1999 June Weanling Sale in Melbourne.

The son of Kenvain was subsequently re-offered for sale as a yearling, finding his way to the Perth stable of Vernon Brockman, who is also listed as a part owner.

Lord Mason has put together a tidy record, winning five races from eight starts including two Listed events and the Magic Millions Perth 3YO Classic. He beat all but the filly Honor Lap, when running second in the WATC Derby Gr 1 and has returned connections more than $250,000 to date.
