 84. Son Of Jeune Wins Darwin Derby

29/07/2002

Lindsay Park Stud’s Melbourne Cup winner Jeune sired his second Derby winner when the Tony McEvoy-trained Young Challenger won the $70,000 Darwin Derby on Saturday, July 27.

According to Tony McEvoy the win has earned the rising four-year-old a place in next week’s Darwin Cup, a race that McEvoy had set for him four months ago.

“He has grown into a much tougher horse over the last twelve months and he handled the trip from Adelaide to Darwin very well. The ability to travel was such a positive trait of Jeune’s and I am pleased he is passing it onto his progeny.

“After an unlucky run in the (Darwin) Guineas it was great to see him run so well on Saturday. It puts him right into contention for the Cup,” McEvoy said.

Young Challenger is the third and final foal produced by the stakes winning Bluebird mare Bourrache, which died shortly after foaling the Derby winner.

The stunning looking Jeune had another two individual winners three days prior to Young Challenger’s win with promising 3YO Super Boom (Jeune / Arandoo) and 2YO Jeune Amour (Jeune / Hazel Time) both winning their first starts.

A four-time Group 1 winner and Horse Of The Year, Jeune is second only to Flying Spur on the leading Third Season Sires list by number of wins. Jeune’s yearlings sold up to $75,000 at an average of $41,250 at the 2002 Adelaide Magic Million Select Sale while weanlings sold for $50,000, $41,000, $37,500, $36,000 and $30,000 at the 2002 Lindsay Park Classic Collection sale.
