A mere 4 inches separated Champion Three-Year Old Colt Real Quiet from immortality. That was the margin the son of Quiet American was beaten in the Belmont Stakes, third leg of the American Triple Crown.
After victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes the Bob Baffert-trained colt charged to the lead before turning into the long Belmont straight, bravely attempting to turn back the challenge of Victory Gallop, the colt Real Quiet had beaten into second place in the first two legs. In a dramatic bumping finish Victory Gallop prevailed by a nose denying Real Quiet of becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed.
It was interesting to see at the beginning of the Kentucky Sales series that two other Triple Crown contenders, Charismatic and Silver Charm, which suffered the same fate as Real Quiet, had their first crop of yearlings available.
At the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Selected Yearling Sale a colt by Real Quiet out of the Akarad mare Third Party sold to agent Jack Goldthorpe for $200,000 while another colt by Real Quiet out of stakes winning Secretariat mare Tweak sold to agent Mohammed Moubarak for 110,000. Real Quiet ranked as the fourth leading first crop sire overall, averaging more than both Charismatic and Silver Charm.
The winner of US$3,271,802 including 5 Grade 1 races, the Hollywood Futurity at two, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes at three and the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pimlico Special at four, Real Quiet looks exceptional value at his 2002 service fee of $19,800 (inc GST).
Real Quiet retired to Vinery Stud in 2000, covering a high-class group of mares including Viva Lyphard (Lyphard), Special Gallery (Tate Gallery), Danish Pastry (Danehill), Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon) and Croatian Storm (Last Tycoon). If he can impart a mere fraction of his own ability to his offspring then Real Quiet is due for a successful career at stud.
