 79. Bellotto On The Boil

27/07/2002

The Mr. Prospector stallion Bellotto hit the racing headlines this year as the sire of Australia’s leading sire of two-year’s Clang. However the Lakewood Stud stallion underscored once again that he is a prolific winner getter in his own right with a treble at the Cheltenham meeting on Saturday.

The run of success for Bellotto started with 4yo gelding Bellition (ex Acid Flash by Rubiton) in race 2. The following race was won by 3yo filly Our Fame (ex Dirty Dancing by Durham Ranger) and 35 minutes later 4yo mare Oil Can Annie (ex Giorgio Queen by Habituate) led home a Bellotto quinella when defeating Ronda’s Girl (ex Star Sign Girl by Rostov).

Originally imported to stand at Arrowfield Stud in 1989, Bellotto was a class racehorse despite the fact he registered only 2 non-stakes wins in 7 starts. A gauge of Bellotto’s undoubted ability was best demonstrated by his seconds in the English 2000 Guineas (G1) behind Don’t Forget Me and behind Reference Point in the Epsom Derby (G1).
While he has been a consistent sire of stakes winners, including the Group One winners Bullwinkle (SA Derby) Bellzevir (Goodwood H) and My Brightia (VRC Oaks), Bellotto has failed to sire an outstanding racehorse that would ensure his commercial acceptance at Arrowfield.

However at Lakewood Stud, South Australia Bellotto is a much larger “fish” in a smaller pond. At his reduced 2002 fee of $6,600 (inc GST) Bellotto should appeal to both the commercial and owner/breeder. He has certainly proved to be a leading representative of the Mr. Prospector sireline in Australia.
