A mid week two-year old handicap at Canterbury is rarely anything to get overly enthused about however the Gai Waterhouse-trained In Good Time, winner of the the De Bortoli Wines Hcp (1250m), has a lot in common with the current boom two-year old Thorn Park.
For a start both are by Coolmore Stud’s outstanding young sire Spinning World. Both were sold at the 2001 Easter Yearling sale, where In Good Time was purchased for $180,000, $20,000 less than Thorn Park. And finally both descend from the emerging family of the champion Tommy Smith-trained filly Denise’s Joy.
In Good Time (Spinning World-Miss Lazarus by Sir Tristram ) signaled early ability when running second as favourite to champion two-year old elect Victory Vein in a 2yo handicap race on the Kensington track in October last year. Today’s win at Canterbury was just his second start and the bay looks to have a bright future even though Waterhouse was reticent to put too big a wrap on the gelding.
"He's got a few things to do yet before measuring up to the spring," Waterhouse said.
"He's certainly an above-average two-year-old and we've had a big opinion of him since day one, Waterhouse told AAP.
"He's just taken time to mature.
"He trialled well coming into today, did a few things wrong in the run but still came through.
"The way the programming is in Sydney at the moment he'll have to step straight up to open company on a Saturday but the potential is certainly there.
"He's a nice horse in the making."
The win of In Good Time continues the excellent run of success enjoyed by the progeny of champion miler Spinning World. Consider what the son of Nureyev has achieved in the month of July alone. Thorn Park (ex Joy by Bluebird) emphasized that he is a star in the making with a hollow win at Rosehill on July 20 following on from his sparkling debut performance at Rosehill on June 29. Al Megdam (ex Anoosh by Broad Reach) broke his maiden at Kembla Grange on July 6 and backed up 11 days later with a strong win at Randwick.
Overseas on July 9 two-year old filly Spinola (ex Exocet by Deposit Ticket) won the time-honoured Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket while on the same program Spinette (ex Net Worth by Forty Niner) broke her maiden in the Robin Parke Memorial Maiden Stakes over 10 furlongs. Promising three-year old colt Common World (ex Spenderella by Common Grounds) finished second in the Group 2 Goffs International Stakes at the Curragh on July 13.
