 77. Filante Filly Oaks Bound

25/07/2002

The John Symonds-trained Macedon Lady, a first crop daughter of Widden Stud’s champion Filante, has the VRC Oaks as her long-term goal after a fast finishing win in the July Hcp. (1400) at Sandown today.

Coming from near last on the turn Macedon Lady overpowered Sneeze (Zeditave) by a long neck with a further half-length to Wonkamania (Keltrice).Symonds purchased Macedon Lady at the 2001 William Inglis Classic yearling sale for $22,000. From the same sale Symonds purchased Victoria’s leading two-year old, Blue Diamond Stakes winner and $1million earner Bel Esprit.
"She was my pick over Bel Esprit and I bought her for $24,000," Symons told AAP.
"She's very smart and I think she'll be a spring filly. She has a very bright future.
"I'll ease her up now and be nominating her for the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in October and the Crown Oaks at Flemington in early November," he said.
"It may be a bit rushed but we'll see how she goes."

Macedon Lady’s sire Filante retired to Widden Stud in 1998 following a magnificent racetrack career that yielded 7 wins, 9 seconds and 3 thirds for earnings of $1,814, 837. His victories included a course record-breaking win in the AJC Epsom H. (G1), the VATC Yalumba Stakes (G1), Tatts Chelmsford Stakes (G2), and AJC Warwick Stakes (G2) (twice). Filante also recorded six Group One seconds and three Group One thirds. He twice ran heartbreaking seconds in Australia’s WFA championship W.S. Cox Plate (G1), once at the hands of champion Saintly who is a son of Sky Chase, like Filante, a son of Windsor Park Stud’s outstanding stallion Star Way.

Macedon Lady is the first foal of the 5-times winning Cossack Warrior mare Boo Ticket a half-sister to outstanding West Australian performer Cranky Tikit (Groucho). The winner opf 16 races including 6 in succession Cranky Tikit earned over $378,000 with wins in the WATC Winerbottom Stakes (G2), Belmont Guineas (LR), Farnley Sprint (LR), Ruabon Sprint (LR) (twice) and Bunbury Stakes (LR).
