Although the gross and averages were down nearly a third on last year's sale, a bright light in the gloom at what is recognised as America's premier yearling sale, the Keeneland July Select sale, was the respect paid to yearlings by the Danzig sire Belong to Me, a regular visitor in the southern hemisphere breeding seasons to the Widden Stud.

Belong to Me, sire of Group One winners in America and of nine two-year-old winners in his first Australian season of representation, the one ending this month, had three lots available. One, a filly, was purchased at the sale for Sheikh Mohammed for $US2million and they averaged $US780,000.

The top Belong to Me was the fourth highest priced yearling at the sale, one which was headed by a Storm Cat colt which made $US3,100,000. All told only 87 of the 146 lots that went in the ring found buyers. The total receipts of $US42,385,000 were the lowest for a quarter of a century. Last year saw 89 lots out of 132 sold for a total of $63,212,000.

The Belong to Me filly is nearly a three-quarter sister to the brilliant Danzig performer Monashee Mountain, a visitor by arrangement with the Coolmore group to the Willowbend Stud at Beaudesert. Monashee Mountain is a half-brother to Tomisue's Delight, the dam of the yearling, both of them being from the Mr Prospector Group One winner Prospector's Delight.
