 69. Lord Weinstock Dead At 77

25/07/2002

Lord Arnold Weinstock, one of Great Britain’s most famous owners and breeders,, died on July 23 after a prolonged illness at the age of 77.

He was famed for breeding the champions Troy, Sun Princess and Pilsudski as well as last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Golan at his Ballymacoll Stud in Ireland.

His association with racing began in 1960 when he and his late father-in-law Sir Michael Sobell purchased Ballymacoll.
Early G1 winners bred under their banner included Sallust, Homeric, Gaily and Admetus.

The highpoint of all Lord Weinstock’s achievements in racing was Troy’s seven length success in 1979 Epsom Derby, a win that has been rated one of the greatest classic performances of all time.

Troy went on to win the Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.

Troy was trained by the late Major Dick Hern, who also trained the champion filly Sun Princess, for Lord Weinstock.

Sun Princess won the Epsom Oaks by a record 12 lengths in 1983 before winning the St. Leger. Hern also trained Eclipse Stakes and King George winner Ela-Mana-Mou for Lord Weinstock.

In more recent times Sir Michael Stoute as prepared numerous top class winners carrying Lord Weinstock’s colours. They have included Breeders' Cup Turf and Dubai Champion Stakes winner Pilsudski and Golan, who became the eighth classic winner and 22nd G1 winner bred at Ballymacoll Stud when he won the 2000 Guineas.

Lord Weinstock was managing director of the General Electric Company in England before retiring in 1996.
