 67. Brazil Bans Woodman

23/07/2002

Globetrotting stallion Woodman may be banned from standing at stud in Brazil this year.

Plans to send Woodman to Brazil’s TNT Stud for the southern hemisphere season may not eventuate because of a reported thoroughbred death in Kentucky from West Nile virus.

Woodman, who stood in Australia from 1997 to 2001, has served his latest northern hemisphere season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

His immediate future is clouded as the Brazilian government does not allow a horse to be imported from an area containing West Nile virus until the region is clear of any cases for 90 days.

Ashford Stud has petitioned the Brazilian government for a waiver of the rule and is awaiting a reply. In the meantime TNT Stud has acquired Vettori, another former Australian shuttle sire, from England for the coming season.

Other US stallions Wild Event and Jules arrived in Brazil ahead of the West Nile virus death in Kentucky.
