 57. Hot Market For Winter Thoroughbreds

20/07/2002

A perfect winter's day in Sydney had buyers venturing out in force for a value packed catalogue of broodmares, weanlings, yearlings and tried racehorses. A total of 266 mixed lots were sold today, achieving gross receipts of $1,893,550, up some 37% on last year's record aggregate of $1,378,000.

"The Winter Sale has really gained momentum in recent years, attracting quality bloodstock and a wide range of buyers. The clearance rate of nearly 90% is a great indication of the popularity this sale now enjoys," commented Associate Director, Jonathan D'Arcy.

Banned bleeder Grandiser (Lot 237) was a surprise saletopper, purchased back by one of his original part owners for $110,000. The talented three year old gelding has won four races from seven starts, but two bleeding attacks have placed him on the barred list and any future racing will have to be done in America.

Beautifully bred mare Roadstop (Lot 94), the star offering from the Lucernevale Stud Dispersal, achieved top price honours in the broodmare section, knocked down to Scone based bloodstock agent Glenn Burrows for $97,500. A metropolitan winning daughter of highly regarded broodmare sire Bluebird (USA), she is a three-quarter sister to Blue Diamond winner Road to Success, and a full sister to stakes-winner Condotti.

"She's a lovely type of mare, good length and strength about her," said Burrows.

"Her half-brother by Octagonal made $385,000 at Easter this year and she's in foal to a great colonial sire in Zeditave, so there's a lot to like about her."

The reduction of bloodstock from Gooree Park Stud was well received by buyers eager to tap into some of the most successful families in the studbook. The Gooree draft generated turnover of $547,900, highlighted by Lot 67, Tropical Splendour, a five year old mare by Catrail (USA) from the family of wonderful Black Type producer Royalivor (USA), dam of Group winners King Ivor, Snake Eyes and Linney Head. Astute purchasers Emirates Park went to $75,000 to secure the well related mare with a positive test to leading sire Octagonal (NZ).

Another top seller for Gooree was Lot 54, Estancia, an unraced daughter of VRC Oaks winner Sandy's Pleasure by Dehere (USA). The five year old boasted a much sought after positive cover to outstanding sire Snippets and was purchased by Iskander Racing for $75,000.

"The response has been terrific," said Andrew Baddock, Bloodstock Manager for Gooree Park Stud.

"We're really happy with the sale, they all sold well, even dear old Sudden."

Sudden, the nineteen old dam of champion two year old and Golden Slipper winner Burst, paraded in immaculate condition and although not in foal this season, fetched $36,000 to the bid of Inglis as agent.
