 54. Cullen Closely Related To South African Star

19/07/2002

Arrowfield and Woodlands Studs were not the only breeding establishments celebrating the win of the outstanding South African two-year old colt Suntagonal in the Group1 Premier's Champion Stakes last week.

The Arrowfield-bred son of Octagonal is out of a daughter of the brilliant broodmare Princess Tracy the dam of 5 stakes winners. Princess Tracy has produced South African champion filly Tracy’s Element (Last Tycoon) the winner of 11 races including 4 at Group One level; QTC Stradbroke H. (G1) winner and proven stakes producing, NZ based stallion Danasinga (Danehill); Topasannah (Commanche Run) like half-sister Tracy’s Element raced with distinction in South Africa where she was a Group Two winner of 6 races; and MVRC C S Hayes Stakes (G3) winner Towkay (Last Tycoon)

The fifth stakes winner out of Princess Tracy is Danasinga’s full brother Cullen. A beautifully conformed son of the champion sire of sires Danehill, Cullen was a $600,000 purchase at the Sydney Easter sale. The winner of the Group 3 Blue Diamond Stakes at two, Cullen threw away a Group One win as a three-year old by racing erraticallyin the Ellerslie Railway H. Displaying all the speed so prized by stud masters looking to secure a son of Danehill, Cullen dead-heated with Appoint in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes as a four-year old.

The first crop by Cullen will be born this spring at Westbury Stud in Karaka where he stands for a fee of $7,000 + GST.
