How lucky can you get? Dr. Kim McKellar of WYNDHOLM PARK in Victoria, secures LAKE CONISTON for the 2002 Australian Season and the next day his son CONTINENT wins the 250,000 pounds Group 1 JULY CUP at Newmarket - the race widely regarded as England’s premier 6-furlong race.
If this wasn’t already enough justification for bringing this exciting son of Bluebird to Victoria, then on the following day at Moonee Valley his daughter Aragonce won the 1000m Carlton Draught Flying Handicap by a convincing 3 lengths for trainer, Russell Cameron.
LAKE CONISTON, Europe’s Champion Sprinter, also won the Group 1 July Cup by 4 lengths beating five group 1 winners.
Continent is out of the Kris mare Krisia and was bred by Juddmonte Farms in England. In winning the Gr 1 July Cup, he defeated Bahamian Pirate by House Buster and Danehurst by Danehill, as well as the winner and placegetters of the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, Malhub and Three Point.
Continent also finished second in the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes at Ascot on June 18 2002. “Continent responded to a first-time tongue-tie to run an extraordinary race. He gave them three lengths at the start by standing still when the stalls opened, and was still held up last two furlongs out. While others struggled to get a run, he got a dream run nearer the stands' rail and would have won in another couple of strides.”
Racing Post, UK.
The sires of the last 8 July Cups winners include: - BLUEBIRD, DANZIG (3 times), INDIAN RIDGE, NUREYEV, DANEHILL and LAKE CONISTON.
The JULY CUP has always been the benchmark for producing outstanding horses and world-class stallions. The who’s who of winners include Mozart by Danehill 2001, Agnes World by Danzig 2000, Stravinsky by Nureyev 1999, El Nadim by Danzig 1998, Compton Place by Indian Ridge 1997, Anabaa by Danzig 1996, LAKE CONISTON by Bluebird 1995, Owington by Green Desert 1994, Hamas by Danzig 1993, Mr Brooks champion sprinter 1992, Polish Patriot by Danzig 1991, Royal Academy by Nijinsky 1990, Cadeaux Genereux by Nijinsky 1989, Soviet Star by Nureyev 1988, Ajdal by Northern Dancer 1987 and Green Desert by Danzig in 1986.
LAKE CONISTON is one of the highest rated sprinters to ever stand in Australia with a Timeform rating of 136. He was also 1995 European Champion Sprinter and 1994 French Champion Sprinter.
LAKE CONISTON commenced stud duties in Ireland and Australia in 1996. To date, he is already the sire of 87 individual winners including 14 stakes win or placed and over $3.5m across 10 countries.
His stakeswinners include CONTINENT 1ST JULY CUP Gr1, Tote Ayr Gold Cup, 2nd Kings Stand Stakes Gr2, KAPISTON 1st Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes Gr1, KARASTA 1st May Hill Stakes Gr3, 2nd Prix Marcel Boussac Gr1, MI ANNA 1st Premio Repubbliche Marinare LR, ARAGONCE 1st K.P.M.G.Stakes LR and stakesplaced WATERSIDE 2nd Norfolk Stakes Gr3, KINGS IVORY, REX, plus stakes and other performers GRIZEDALE, LAKE VERDI, LUPINE, PRINCESS ELECTRA, WEEDS, SEACOMBE GROVE and COTTON KID.
Another exciting son of LAKE CONISTON is WATERSIDE, who finished second to arguably the best two-year-old in the world last season, JOHANNESBURG, in the 1000m Gr 3 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
LAKE CONISTON’S recent success was highlighted during the famous Royal Ascot Week of Racing (five days of racing) in England - LAKE CONISTON was ranked 8th. The top 20 were: Danehill, Storm Cat, Kingmambo, Grand Lodge, Machiavellian, Robellino, Barathea, LAKE CONISTON, Alhaarth, Indian Ridge, Shirley Heights, Zamindar, Night Shift, Rainbow Quest, Theatrical, In the Wings, Danzig, Selkirk, Definite Article and Primo Dominie.
Between the period of March 8 and July 7 LAKE CONISTON sired a total of 38 winners and 110 placings in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America.
LAKE CONISTON has previously stood at Woodlands Stud, New South Wales, Australia and Java Lodge, New Zealand.
LAKE CONISTON will be standing at WYNDHOLM PARK at a very special introductory fee of $6,000 incl. GST. LAKE CONISTON is affordably priced to cater for all the small and medium sized breeders in the Victorian industry and no doubt his presence will be felt throughout Australasia.
