 5. Danehill On Top Of UK Table

01/07/2002

Royal Ascot has pushed Danehill to the top of the UK sires’ table.

The five days of racing that saw 30 races run for more than £3 million prizemoney, was also a success for another high profile shuttle sire Grand Lodge

Danehill topped the sires’ table for the second successive year thanks to his quinella result in the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes by his top colts Rock Of Gibraltar and Landseer plus a win in the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes by the filly Irresistible Jewel.

Danehill’s tally for the week of two wins, three seconds and two thirds was supported by his success as broodmare sire of the G3 Queen Mary Stakes winner Romantic Liason and Balmoral Handicap winner Zargus.

Rock Of Gibraltar’s success in the St. James’s Palace Stakes was the colt’s fifth successive G1 win in a race that has a great history of producing outstanding sires.

Among the past winners is Grand Lodge, who also shot up the sires’ table thanks his son Grandera’s powerful five length victory in the G1 Princes Of Wales’s Stakes.

Other sires with doubles at Royal Ascot came from Machiavellian, Barathea, Night Shift, Rainbow Quest and US champion Storm Cat.

Storm Cat sired G1 Coronation Stakes winner Sophisticat and Statue Of Liberty, winner of the G3 Coventry Stakes while Rainbow Quest, apart from his own success, had his shuttle son Spectrum sire G3 Jersey Stakes winner Just James.

Danehill’s sire Danzig was also sire of Listed Hampton Court Stakes winner Burning Sun, while 28 of the 30 winners had at least one strain of Northern Dancer in their pedigree with nine inbred to him.

The only success for Sadler’s Wells was as broodmare sire of Irresistible Jewel and G2 Hardwicke Stakes winner Zindabad and through wins for his sire sons Barathea and In The Wings.

Danehill’s daughter My First Romance, dam of Zargus and Romantic Liaison, was responsible for the notable achievement of producing three Royal Ascot winners in three years with her first three foals.

In Australia Danehill is only a month away from his sixth Australian sires’ premiership. Interestingly the past week has seen produce his 200th individual starter of the season for 99 winners of 170 races.
