 42. Forest Glowing

13/07/2002

With so much hype surrounding a lot of stallions it seems almost derogatory nowadays to call a stallion a good “bread and butter” sire. Yet that description best fits the consistent Green Forest stallion Forest Glow, which stands at John North’s Bowness Thoroughbred Stud near Young N.S.W.

Forest Glow produced a two states metropolitan winning double on Saturday when the ultra-consistent Mick Cerchi-trained three-year old Silver Birch lumped 57kgs to victory in the Goldbake Pies Hcp (1600m) at Moonee Valley while at Eagle Farm four-year old mare Final Shuffle won her second consecutive metropolitan race in the quaintly named Katherine Love Me Mangoes Hcp a class 6 race over 1600m.

Silver Birch (ex Bendara Lass by Esperanto) began the season inauspiciously enough when fourth of 11 in an 1100m maiden at Bendigo however he has proved a model of consistency since. His Moonee Valley win was his first in town but his sixth from 10 starts with earnings of over $64,000. Cerchi is aiming the grey at the Mildura Cup later this month in an attempt to win the race for the seventh time.
Originally sold at the 2000 N.Z. Bloodstock Colts Sale for $35,000, Silver Birch made twice that amount when resold at the N.Z. Bloodstock Horses In Training Sale later that year. A half brother to Mathieus (Salieri) a prolific winner on the Singapore/Malaysian circuit, Silver Birch is the third foal of the 3-times winning Esperanto mare Bendara Lass a half sister to the ACT Black Opal Stakes (G2) winner Zadook (Opera Prince).

After the grey’s first win in town Mick Cerchi was high in his praise for Silver Birch "I didn't think we could beat Price's horse (runner-up Evil Master)," said Cerchi. "But he's honest and a real trier. "We have taken him quietly because we knew he had talent and it's paying dividends with him going up in class all the time."

Forest Glow’s second winner on Saturday, Final Shuffle, has also been a model of consistency with 7 wins, 3 seconds and a third from 23 starts with earnings of over $80,000. Final Shuffle is the last foal produced by Soft Shuffle (Adirnondack Holme) an unplaced half-sister to STC Parramatta Cup (LR) winner Sir Eden a highly popular and prolific winner of country cups around N.S.W. in the early 1980’s.

A top class sprinter on turf in the U.S. Forest Glow initially stood at Yarraman Park where he served his first book of mares in 1993. He is a son of the Champion European two-year old and Champion European miler Green Forest a grandson of Star Kingdom’s highly successful son Noholme, a brother of the flying Todman.
While not a great success at stud Green Forest is the sire of the instant stud success Made Of Gold, which will make his first appearance at Mike Becker’s The Independent Stallion Station this year.

Forest Glow has sired 155 winners from 230 starters for earnings of over $5 million. He has five stakes winners Fouardee, Flickering Fire, Emission, All The Rave, Bowood Forest and Count Grove. This year Forest Glow has sired 58 winners from 115 starters with earnings of over $1.3 million. The star has been Fouadee which began the season with a win in a restricted handicap at Rosehill in August but finished the season with wins in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Stakes at Warwick Farm, the Listed Satellite Quality Stakes at Canterbury and the Listed Dr J Power Handicap at Eagle Farm as well as running second in the Group 2 Theo Marks Quality Hcp. Another star performer for forest Glow has been that highly talented yet frustrating galloper Emission. Contesting little other than stakes events throughout the season Emission has run second in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington, third in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and a close up sixth in the Group 1 Epsom Hcp. at Randwick.

Forest Glow stands at Bowness Stud for a fee of $4,400. He deserves the attention of owner/breeders looking for a proven stallion without having to outlay a fortune on a service fee.
