Although he was no Luskin Star, a more recent Golden Slipper contestant remembered this week is Iga Ninja, a seventh placegetter in the1987 renewal of this great test of juveniles after earlier winning three races and finishing third in the Todman Slipper Trial.

He was bred by Henry 'Boyd' Gaegler using the Biscay sire Sylvester, one he stood at his Rosehill Stud on the western side of the Hunter River at Muswellbrook. Iga Ninja was one of a long list of winners turned out by this breeder in sixty years of involvement with the breed, one of the others being the brilliant Red Gauntlet colt Stars and Stripes.

Boyd Gaegler has stood a small number of sires over the years, another being the Pakistan horse Lord Pakistan. He has bred, trained and raced quite a few of their stock and included among wins successes at Scone and Muswellbrook and also on Sydney tracks.

His contribution is recalled with the celebration of his eightieth birthday this week. It sees him down to only one horse and he claims it will be his last. However, along with wife Fran, he has got so much enjoyment from racing, it wont be surprising to see his colours going round in the future.
