 28. Sunday Silence Dominates Foal Sale

09/07/2002

When the gavel fell on Lot 298 to bring to a close the two-day Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale at Northern Horse Park in Hokkaido today, it was once again the Japanese phenomenon Sunday Silence that dominated proceedings. However Coolmore Stud’s Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus made an auspicious start to his stud career by siring two of the ten top priced foals.

SUNDAY SILENCE
The top priced lot came on the second day when Takaya Shimakawa paid Y335m (approx. A$5 million) for a bay colt by Sunday Silence out of the Nijinsky mare Dancing Key. The colt is a full brother to Champion Japanese 3yo filly Dance Partner, winner of the Japanese Oaks (G1), and Champion Japanese 3yo colt Dance In The Dark, winner of the Japanese St Leger (G1).

Second highest price went to the sales topper on day one a colt by Sunday Silence out of Lancashire Oaks (G3) winner Fanjica (Law Society). Genichiro Tahara paid Y205 million (A$3m) for bay, which like the sales top priced lot, was consigned by Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm

On the opening day two weanlings by Fusaichi Pegasus were among the leading lots. Hiroyoshi Usuda purchased a bay colt out of Prix Vermeille (G1) winner Queen Maud (Akarad) for Y85m (A$1,270,000) while a dark bay colt out of Jeweled Crown (Seattle Slew), was purchased for Y81m (A$1,209,000) by John McCormack. Already the dam of a Group 2 winner, Jeweled Crown is a half sister to champion racehorse Chief’s Crown.
