 23. ‘Furh’s On Fire

03/07/2002

With two metropolitan winners from his only two starters on Saturday Vinery Stud’s first season sire Langfuhr experienced a red-letter day. The occasion was made extra special for the leading international nursery as one of those winners, the Tony McEvoy trained Luna Scene, carried Vinery’s green with a white V silks.

LANGFUHR
Having her first race start, Luna Scene tracked the favourites Kokoda and Run Like Blevic before overpowering those two halfway down the Cheltenham straight and then staving off the challenges of Brandy Cruster and Clearview Bay to win the Devaraja at Oakside H.

A $150,000 purchase at the 2001 N.Z Bloodstock Premier Sale Luna Scene is the fifth foal and second winner from the unraced Ahonoora mare Moon Vision, a half sister to 4-time Group 1 winner Planet Ruler. Moon Vision’s first foal is the N.Z stakes winner Andrella a daughter of Dehere.

It was a pair of Dehere colts that chased home Langfuhr’s second winner of the day, the Bart Cummings-trained two-year old colt Frightening.
The prospect of a forward showing by Frightening was on the cards when Cummings elected to make the trip from Sydney to Melbourne especially to see the colt run. Andrew Findlay gave the son of Langfuhr the run of the race despite coming from barrier 14. Once the bay colt hit the front he galloped on resolutely to defeat Glefti (Dehere) by a half-length with Natural Blitz (Dehere) 1-1/4 lengths away third in the Hanan Displays H at Flemington.
It was the first win from three starts for Frightening who debuted with a promising fifth at Flemington before a creditable second to in a two-year-old maiden at Geelong on June 27.

"I thought he was worth coming down for today," said Cummings, who bred the winner. "He relaxes and settles well and has a good turn of foot."
"He has a good motor and tries hard. He'll go for a rest now, I'll ease him up for five or six weeks," Cummings said. "He's a nice horse."

Frightening is the second foal of the Nassipour mare Nassabelle a member of the family that produced VRC Oaks (G1) winner Rom’s Stiletto. He was consigned to the 2001 Magic Millions Yearling sale in Widden Stud’s consignment where he was reported as sold for $100,000.

Langfuhr has sired a highly creditable nine winners from 18 runners from his first Australian crop including the metropolitan winners Caprill (Eagle Farm), Broadband (Flemington), Sacred Hill (Sandown), Frightening and Luna Scene. When today’s earnings are factored in Langfuhr’s total earnings will exceed $140,000.

It is not surprising that the progeny of Langfuhr are becoming prominent towards the end of the season. Although the powerfully built son of Danzig was a champion sprinter/miler he continued to improve with maturity. He enjoyed his best season as a five year old when from three starts at that age he captured the Grade 1 Metropolitan H. over a mile and the Grade 1 Carter H. over 7 furlongs. The previous year he had defeated top-class colt Honour And Glory in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes.
