 2. June Weanling and Thoroughbred Sale

01/07/2002

The 2002 June Weanling and Thoroughbred Sale at Oaklands Junction concluded on June 26 with a further 212 mixed lots selling for $1,515,150.

Billed as the biggest bloodstock auction ever conducted in Victoria, the sale exceeded all expectations, generating a massive $5,853,750 in turnover, with a grand total of 667 mixed lots selling at an average price of $8,776.

Associate director Peter Heagney commented “The sheer size of this year’s catalogue was always going to ensure a rise in gross on last year’s total of $5,050,350, but to be up by 16% is a fabulous result.

“The average price remained on a par with last year and the solid clearance rate of 81% is a clear indication of the healthy state of the Victorian bloodstock industry.”

Top price on the final day $100,000 paid for the proven broodmare Desert Orchid, dam of Group One winner Desert Sky.

She was offered in foal Desert Sky’s sire Hurricane Sky and was purchased by bloodstock agent Dermot Farrington.

* YOUNG mares with strong racetrack performance dominated the market on the second day of the June Weanling and Thoroughbred Sale at Oaklands Junction on June 25.
The day saw 188 of the 280 catalogued mares sell for a total of
$2,693,850 at an average of $14,328.

Topping the list at $130,000 was brilliant race mare Hula Wonder, a G3 winner of 13 races and almost $400,000 prizemoney.

The Hula Chief mare, who has not been to stud, was purchased by Les Young’s Doncaster Bloodstock Services.

Hula Wonder is out of the equally gifted Natural Wonder, a stakeswinner of 12 races.

Stakes placed Rubiton mare Amen Ruby, who also has not been to stud, brought the next highest price of $88,000. She was offered as a racing and breeding proposition and was purchased by Tim Stewart and Associates.

Classy Rory’s Jester mare Whoopi Ride, in foal to Danzero, sold for $87,500 to Kingston Park Stud while another seven mares brought $60,000 or more.

* A weanling colt by Flying Spur, boasting champion sires Zabeel and Carnegie among his close relations, set the standard on the opening day of Victoria’s biggest bloodstock sale at Oaklands Junction on June 23.

The three-day June Weanling and Thoroughbred Sale began with a record offering 335 weanlings. At the end of the day 265 were sold for a total of $1,582,750 at an average of $5972.

The top price of $57,500 was paid by Ballarat trainer Darren Weir for a Flying Spur colt from the Sir Tristram mare Trist A Girl.

Trist A Girl is a grand-daughter of the great Northern Dancer sire Lyphard and is a half sister to US G1 winner Filago from Derly, a member of one of the great international racing and breeding families.

Derly is a sister to the G1 Cheveley park Stakes winner Durtal and half sister to the great mare Detroit, winner of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and dam of Carnegie, the multiple G1 winner who has risen to the top of the sire ranks in both hemispheres.

Deryl’s dam Derna also produced Valderna, whose daughters include Zabeel’s dam Lady Giselle.

Other notable prices included $39,000 for a colt by General Nediym, $38,000 for a Lion Cavern colt and $26,000 for a colt by Danehill Dancer.

The General Nediym colt is a half brother to prolfiic Melbourne winners Paint The Wildowod and Copper Wildwood.

The sale continues on June 25 with the broodmare section.
