New President for New Zealand Breeders'

At its first meeting after last Wednesday’s Annual General meeting, the NZTBA Council elected Peter Hutt as the Association's 12th President.
Mr Hutt, a private breeder and solicitor from Timaru, succeeds John Aubrey, Hamilton who served as President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association since 2001.
Peter Francis, Auckland is the Council's new Vice President and retains his previous role of Treasurer. Rick Williams, Cambridge is the third member of the Council's new Executive. Nelson Schick elected to stand down from the Executive, but remains on the Council.
Mr Hutt, 50, is only the third South Island-based President in the NZTBA's 54-year history. Ken Austin, Canterbury was the Association's first President in 1949-50. Bob Nurse, also from Canterbury, led the NZTBA in 1983-84.
Peter Hutt has been breeding horses since 1976. He bred and raced Group 3 winner Peat, dam of Group 2 winner Travellin' Man and currently owns two broodmares, Jubilee (by Nassipour) and Shenton Way (by Noble Bijou).
He was first elected to the NZTBA Council in 1992 and has been a member of the Council's Executive since 1996. Mr Hutt was also a committee member of the Timaru Racing Club for almost 20 years, and of the Waimate Racing Club for ten years.
He says "I am looking forward to the challenges of advancing the interests of our membership and I emphatically reject calls for the Association to be simply a "breed society".
"NZTBA members have clearly indicated their substantial investment and interest in domestic racing. We are therefore committed to working with administrators and politicians to reverse its decline."
"The NZTBA’s representation of breeders’ interests in matters such as equine health, industry marketing and bloodstock taxation will have far less significance if their direct and indirect investment and participation in New Zealand racing is not also supported."
Peter Francis is owner-manager of Professional Printing and Systems, Auckland, and has bred, raced and sold horses in New Zealand for 25 years. He bred and raced, in partnership with friends, the Group One winners Prussian Blue and Ensign Ewart. Peter currently has ownership interests in eight broodmares, four racehorses and nine young thoroughbreds. He has served on the NZTBA Council since 1997.
Rick Williams has been general manager of The Oaks, Cambridge since its purchase by Terry Jarvis in 1998. He previously managed Waikato Stud for six years, and Bloomsbury Stud (New Zealand) for three years. Mr Williams has been an NZTBA Councillor since 1996.
The NZTBA Annual General Meeting confirmed the election of two new Councillors, Mark Chittick for the northern region, and Sam Williams for the central region.
Mark is manager of the Chittick family-owned Waikato Stud, Matamata, and Sam manages Little Avondale Stud, Masterton with his father "Buzz."
