75. Australian appointed as Senior Stipendiary Steward in Macau

Tom Hayles, former Chairman of Stewards in South Australia, has been appointed to the position of Senior Stipendiary Steward in Macau with effect from 1 February 2002.

 

 

76. Byrne off to a flying start in Macau

Jim Byrne, top Queensland jockey, is off to a flying start in Macau riding a double at his first meeting. Byrne is in Macau for the next two months trialling with former Queensland trainer, Barry Baldwin who won the Macau trainers’ premiership last season and is currently third this year.

 

 

77. Award of Merit to Sheikh Mohammed

The Blood-Horse reports that Sheikh Mohammed has been honoured with a Special Eclipse Award of Merit "in recognition of his extraordinary contributions and accomplishments in both racing and philanthropy".

 

Special Eclipse Awards winners are determined by a committee which includes the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers Association. The Eclipse Award presentation will take placed on 18 February at the Fontainebleau Hilton Resort in Florida.

 

Sheikh Mohammed donated 100% of the earnings of the Godolphin runners at the Breeders’ Cup meeting to the September 11 disaster relief fund. Thanks to Tempera, Fantastic Light and Sakhee that amounted to about US$2 million.

 

 

78. Vale – Unfuwain

Shadwell Stud has announced the death of Unfuwain, who was put down recently as a result of a serious neurological condition which developed suddenly. Unfuwain was 17 years-old and was due to cover a full book of mares at Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Nunnery Stud in 2002. He was retired to stud in 1989 and from nine crops to race, Unfuwain has sired 28 stakes winners and six Group 1 winners. His best son is champion European two-year-old Alhaarth, now a promising stalltion in Ireland.

 

 

79. Hurdle for Jockeys’ Website

The NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board (TRB) has banned jockeys from making comments about their upcoming mounts on a new website (racewebb.com) as they are concerned the website will contravene several rules of racing. Several jockeys and the website’s owner, David Simpson have been interviewed by Stewards. For an annual membership fee of $99, subscribers will be supplied with detailed information and profiles of elite jockeys and comments on their mounts. NSW TRB Chief Steward, Ray Murrihy said the TRB would be checking the legalities before speaking to the Trainer’s Association and the Owners and gauging their views on the website.

 

 

80. Racing Victoria appoints new Chief Executive

Racing Victoria Ltd (RVL) has appointed Neville Fielke as Chief Executive of racing’s new governing body. Mr Fielke was formerly an area vice president with H J Heinz Company for Australia, New Zealand and Japan and Chief Executive Officer of Heinz Watties Australasia. Mr Fielke succeeds Brian Beattie as CEO and is expected to commence his new position by the end of February.

 

 

81. First Group 1 Winner for Clang

Clang (Bellotto(USA)-Sudden Impluse) recorded his first Group 1 success recently when Classic Marco captured the Lion City Cup in Singapore. Classic Marco, a three-year-old, is from Clang’s first crop. Clang is also the sire of flying two-year-old Calaway Gal and is currently fourth on the two-year-old sires list. Clang stands at Willowbend Stud in Queensland.

 

 

82. Appeal Date set for Sheehan

  28/01/2002

Jockey Justin Sheehan’s appeal against a six-week suspension will be heard at the TRB at 5pm on 31 January 2002. NSW TRB stewards outed Sheehan until 24 February 2002 on a charge of improper riding.

 

 

83. Gold Ace records First Stakes Winner

  28/01/2002

When Westace saluted in the listed Feltex-Queen Adelaide Stakes at Cheltenham Park recently, he became Gold Ace’s first stakes winner. Gold Ace was a multiple Group 1 winner having saluted in the VRC Salinger Stakes, AJC Galaxy and the VRC Lightning Stakes. Gold Ace entered stud in 1997 and he stands at Ealing Park in Victoria.

 

 

84. Stephen King to return to Australia

Popular Victorian jockey Steven King, who is currently 9th in the Hong Kong Jockey’s Premiership, is to return to Australia. King will close his season in Hong Kong on Derby Day, 17 March 2002.

 

 

85. Vale – Snippets

The thoroughbred industry is in mourning with the news of the death of Snippets, one of the most successful locally bred stallions. Snippets was euthanased on humane grounds after suffering internal haemorrhaging, he was 17 years of age and he will be buried at Arrowfield Stud alongside Kenmare(FR), the farm’s foundation stallion.

 

Snippets (Lunchtime(GB)-Easy Date) had 14 career starts and was the winner of 3 Group 1 events (AJC Sires Produce, AJC The Galaxy and the VRC Oakleigh Plate). He was named co-Champion 2YO of Auistralasia in 1987 and the 1988 Champion 3YO Sprinter of Australasia. He was also the winner of the inaugural Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Snippets started his stud career at Trans Media Park Stud where he stood until 1994. Snippets then moved to Arrowfield Stud where he finished his career.

 

Snippets was the essence in consistency. He is the sire of 393 progeny to race, 306 winners (77.9%) for progeny earnings of $30.8 million. He has had 35 stakes winners and 32 stakes placegetters and his stock are always eagerly awaited at the yearling sales.

 

His outstanding progeny include Spartacus, Pins, Akhenation, Suntain, Sublimate, Mr Vitality, Scandinavia, Camena etc.

 

 

86. William Inglis & Son 2002 Classic Yearling Sale

A total of 342 yearlings were sold at the William Inglis & Son 2002 Classic Yearling Sale recently at an overall gross of $9,958,000 with an average price of $29,117. Last year's record breaking figures proved an impossible act to follow, however this sale still ranks as the second most successful summer yearling sale ever held at Newmarket.

 

Once again, the sale was staunchly supported by trainers from throughout Australia and New Zealand. The top price of the sale was $180,000 for a colt by the first season sire Gold Fever(USA) out of Rich Haul offered by Reavill Farm.
