2002 San Miguel William Inglis and SonClassic Yearling Sale (Day Two)
A further 173 yearlings were sold at Newmarket today, bringing the overall gross to $9,958,000 with a total of 342 yearlings selling at an average price of $29,117. Last year's record breaking figures proved an impossible act to follow, however the sale still ranked as the second most successful summer yearling sale ever held at Newmarket.
Once again, the sale was staunchly supported by trainers from throughout Australia and New Zealand, who are well aware of the quality and unbeatable value that have become the hallmark of this sale. Sydney's leading trainer Gai Waterhouse was seen to advantage, along with "Cups King" Bart Cummings and Melbourne mentor Lee Freedman. Vendors proved willing to meet the market, resulting in a pleasing clearance rate of 80%.
"When you consider how far this sale has come, in just a short space of time, it's really been a great result. Five years ago the average price was just $14,660 and now we've got quality horses selling for up to $180,000," said Managing Director Reg Inglis.
Woodlands Stud, as agent for Mr Christian Marin, provided the top priced lot at today's session, a powerful bay colt by End Sweep (USA) from Marcia. Steve Brem, acting for Gai Waterhouse, finally won the colt with a bid of $120,000, from some astute rivals that included Ron Dufficy and Keiran Moore.
John Rippon's Reavill Farm produced another exciting colt today, this time a Snippets from the good producer Laffy (USA). Victorian bloodstock agent Mark Pilkington secured the colt for $105,000 and he is destined to join the team at Lindsay Park.
"We bought his full brother last year and his half-sister Latte, the year before that," said Pilkington. "Maybe we should just buy the mare!" The Top Lots (overall including both days)
2002 San Miguel William Inglis Son Classic Yearling Sale (Day One)
The opening day of the 2002 Classic Yearling Sale attracted buyers from throughout Australia and New Zealand. A total of 160 yearlings were sold today at an average price of $27,962, achieving a gross of $4,474,000.
John Rippon's Reavill Farm supplied the top priced lot, a big strong muscular bay colt by first season shuttle sire Gold Fever (USA) from the proven producer Rich Haul. She is already the dam of stakes-winners The Heavyweight, Zedrich and Born Western.
The colt was purchased for $180,000 by Sam Li for his Pastore Pty Ltd. racing syndicate. He struck again later in the day, securing two Strategic colts for $75,000 and $50,000.
Leading Melbourne trainer Lee Freedman had to dig deep to secure Lot 97 ($140,000), a good looking bay colt by Encosta de Lago from Slew Buckaroo.
"Encosta de Lago is a bloody good stallion and look at this colt, he's him," said Freedman. "I bought Encosta de Lago from this sale ring and this colt is the very image of him."
