The
handsome grey stallion Kaaptive Edition was one of the most popular
horses to race in Australia in the early 1990's. A winner of over $1.1
million in stakes, he was one of those courageous racehorses that was
never beaten until the judge called a halt, and on more than one occasion
he broke the hearts of his opponents with that never-say-die attitude.
Kaaptive
Edition was bred in New Zealand by the very successful Sir Tristram
stallion Kaapstad from Bevcarlyn by Sovereign Edition. His second dam is
by Oncidium, his third dam is by Pharamond, his fourth by Balloch. All
these sires have been named Champion in various categories in New Zealand
at one time or another.
Kaaptive Edition was as versatile as he was honest. He arrived from New
Zealand to do battle with the best in Australia with a host of feature
wins and placings to his credit. He had won five races from seven starts
at two years including the Group 1 AuRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400
metres), and in all he was to win from 1100 metres to 2400 metres, with
his Australian Group 1 win coming in The BMW at Rosehill. He also won the
Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes, and was placed in the New Zealand and AJC
Derbies.
Having commenced his stud career in Australia in 1993 and now represented
by some 90 winners including the VRC The Vanity (Gr 2) winner Forest
Express and the Stakes placed Count Christo, Kaaptive Edition was
purchased in May 2000 to stand at Plentiful Park Stud at Gracemere, 18
kilometres west of Rockhampton.
An enterprise of Ken and Val Green and Vince and Judy Aspinall, Plentiful
Park was purchased in 1991, and was recognised as a top cattle growing
property with stock from there consistently topping the Gracemere sales.
A major works programme has seen Plentiful Park developed into a fully
equipped horse property with facilities for studwork, spelling and
agistment and pre-training. Water is reticulated to the entire property
from bores with an ample supply and lucerne is grown with spray
irrigation.
Wayne Pearce and his wife Margaret are the resident managers at Plentiful
Park. Wayne, together with some of his family, holds the property next
door to Plentiful Park where they grow prime lucerne for the local
market.
Wayne is an experienced trainer of thoroughbreds and pacers. He trained
the Callaghan Park Rockhampton Horse of the Year Star of Nazareth,
guiding the half-brother to Scomeld to 19 wins. As a trainer and driver
in the harness racing industry, he has won premierships on several
occasions.
Kaaptive Edition served a full book of mares in his first season at
Plentiful Park, returning a fertility average of around 88%. His best
performer is undoubtedly Forest Express, who shows all the tenacity of
her sire, with the Group 2 win and six Group and Listed placings.
In Brisbane, Kaaptive Edition has a very promising horse in Stars in
Bars, and with such a spread of winners, enquiries have been received for
Kaapstad Edition from many districts. Mares have come from the Hunter
Valley to Plentiful Park this season, and proven producers such as Jungle
Jive (the dam of Miss Thundercat), Auburn Miss( dam of Maybe Magic and
Munda Magic) and Hillside Mist (dam of Listed winner Classic Cliche) have
foaled to Kaaptive Edition in the last two season
